We join Virginia Avery at her home in NY State. Virginia became one of the early quilt teachers and is noted for her sense of humor, style, and incredible fortitude. Virginia not only let us take a peek in her home, but offered a special view into her quilted clothing collection. You also have a special seat as Virginia jams with fellow jazz enthusiasts. We salute Virginia and thank her for her incredible contribution to our quilting industry.
Virginia has been a guiding force in our industry for over 50 years! Jinny, as she likes to be called, was a pioneer to quilting when she started teaching in the 60s and did not retire until 2005. Through her enthusiasm in teaching and helping people find their voice in cloth, Jinny quickly became a major influence during the quilting renaissance of the 1970s and her efforts continued for decades. Her innovative approach of using patchwork in garment construction was ground breaking and paved the way for the incredible popularity of art to wear. Her perseverance, dedication, and love of this industry has made her our pick for the first TQS quilt legend – 2007!

Alex and Ricky visit the home of quilting legend Virginia Avery. Virginia, who insists that she be called "Jinny," and Alex have a conversation that covers her life in brief up until now. Afterward, Alex gets to try on some of the garments that Virginia has made over the years.
Alex, Ricky, and the crew get treated to a performance by Jinny and her jazz emsemble, the Kingstreet Stompers, during their monthly jam session.
Alex and Ricky celebrate Jinny with a beautiful star quilt plaque, which she receives as the very first TQS Legend.

Pam teaches how to make one of her original blocks that is both traditional and timeless. Also in this show, Gizmo Girl stops by to offer up new ways to show off and store your quilts.
Thread embellishment and sewing machine expert Libby Lehman shares her Sheer Ribbon Illusion technique and demonstrates how she uses the BSR (Bernina Stitch Regulator). Ricky performs a tune from Heart and Soul.
Ann Fahl, teacher and author, well-known for coloring with thread, appears on the show and shares her whimsical series of quilts based on her beloved and mischievous cat. Ann demonstrates a pattern for creating a colorful cat and Gizmo Girl talks about lollipops for quilters and getting techie with new, easy-to-use computer patterns for quilters.
"Piping Hottie" Susan Cleveland demonstrates Piping Hot Curves by making perfect, tiny piping and accenting curved designs without piecing curves! Mother Superior, Heather Purcell (Superior Threads) talks about how different threads will affect the finished look of a quilt. We also take a visit to the studio of quilter Mickey Depre. Ricky closes the show with a performance of one of his songs.
Mary Fisher, quilt artist, author and AIDS activist, demonstrates unique ways of creating original fabric by stamping and block printing, and shows how she used the technique in African-themed quilts from her book, ABATAKA. An ambassador for the United Nations AIDS program, Mary discusses how she uses her art to raise awareness about AIDS' impact, especially on women. She recently taught HIV-affected women in Africa to make bead bracelets brought to the U.S. market by Fair Winds Trading, Inc., through partnerships with O, The Oprah Magazine, and Macys.com. Also, Ricky and Alex both demonstrate how to make a memory block.
Special Guest Jean Wells uses inspirations from nature to create a series of small quilts. The surprise is how they are combined and displayed! Ricky demonstrates making a flying geese block with only one seam. Gregory Case, TQS' Photo Man, gives advice on selecting photos for use in quilts and Cheryl Uribe, Gizmo Girl, helps us get portable.
Denise Labadie, an award-winning quilt maker, uses her profound love of the Irish landscape and ancient megalithic stones as a theme that is central to her quilting. To best express the moods and textures inherent in her complex landscapes, Denise uses a wide variety of colors, fabrics, and threads. In today's show, Denise demonstrates how she achieves the effect of realistic looking "fabric stones", we get a visit from Cheryl Uribe, The Quilt Show's Gizmo Girl, and a piano performance of Danny Boy by Ricky.

Joen Wolfrom of JWD Publishing, color expert, author, quilter, and photographer shares her love of photography and how to use photo imagery for color inspiration in quilts. All quilters will find this unique approach to color selection valuable when it is time to select colors (and fabrics) for their quilts - regardless of the style of quilt. This show includes a piece (captured at Quilt Festival in Houston) featuring Ami Simms, who explains how she is using quilts to raise funds for Alzheimer's research. Also included is Gregory Case, The Quilt Show's Photo Man, giving tips on quilt photography.
Vikki Pignatelli, quilt artist, author, teacher shows how complicated-looking curves are easy to assemble and demonstrates an improvisational curve technique that includes how to finish unusually-shaped projects with a unique whole cloth facing. Vikki also discusses how her passion, emotion, and spirit are expressed in her work and the founding of her Sacred Threads Exhibits. Also includes a Native American flute performance of Wahatoya by Ricky and a visit to Quilter's Newsletter Magazine.
Joe Cunningham, avid hand quilter, shares a unique but time honored way to baste quilts in preparation for quilting in a hoop or on a machine. Show includes a visit from Bob, The Thread Guy, and a musical duo performance by Joe and Ricky.
