Old Workshirts Never Die... They Just Get Retooled
Name of Maker: Jo Mrvichin
Old Workshirts Never Die... They Just Get Retooled - Nick didn't want to let go of his favorite old work shirts, and asked if I would use them in a quilt for him. He also threw in a few favorite pair of old boxer shorts!! I cut them and backed the fabrics with a light interfacing. He likes the simple drawings of the children at our school, so I fashioned the center which features a primitive design of a Russian Orthodox Church, in which I printed icons for the windows. I also used two raccoon embroideries which were on a favorite old towel of his. He had wanted old jeans for the back, but it would have been impossible to quilt. I found a great fabric with a tool motif. And, of course, there is a tiny acorn at the base of the tree.

Dreaming of the Islands
Name of Maker: Nancy Allen
Dreaming of the Islands - I worked on this during the cold months of winter, so I used sunny colors. Once I added the blue that resembled water, I started thinking about tropical shapes and came up with several ideas for the applique - dolphins, palm trees, shells, starfish, waves, etc. The curves were quite a challenge for me and I had to hand sew some of it in order to get it flat. All that blanket stitching with decorative threads was fun.

With This Ring
Name of Maker: Elaine C Miller
With This Ring - A Wedding gift for my niece. This wedding ring was made using John Flynn's templates, a great way to do this traditional block! The wedding was on the beach in Seattle and the honeymoon was in Hawaii, so I used batik fabrics and quilted hibiscus flowers into the centers of the rings with sea shells in the connecting areas.
