Annie Mae
Name of Maker: Sandra Smith
Annie Mae - This quilt was designed using Gees Bend quilts as an inspiration. I had a book of their quilts and admired the colors in a quilt that was made by Annie Mae. I had a piece of Marimekko fabric in my stash with very similar colors so I made the quilt and named it after Annie Mae.
Geo's Stars
Name of Maker: Sandra Smith
Geo's Stars - I designed this quilt for a client, Ms. Kosel, who loves the night sky. We communicated via email and the Internet because we live in different states. It was fun to work virtually. Ms. Kosel wanted me to create a family heirloom. Something that told a story about her family and close friends. This quilt is called Geo's Stars which is Ms. Kosel's "grand motherly name." The concentric star design of the background is enhanced with star and sky fabrics. The stars against the night sky are her children, grandchildren, nieces nephews and siblings. Each of the large stars in the design represents my client, her parents, and her children. These stars are surrounded with clusters of objects that symbolize traits or interests of that person’s family members. When I finished this quilt in August 2000 Ms. Kosel had an unveiling ceremony where I met all of the "stars." They were truly a bright and shiny group. In August of 2007 Ms. Kosel returned the quilt to me for additions. Her son married, she married Mr. Kosel, there are more grandchildren, etc. I guess we'll have to unveil the quilt again and invite the new comers over for the celebration
