Reaching for the Stars
Name of Maker: Mary Jo Kaszubinski
Reaching for the Stars - This quilt was designed and created for our school's Artrageous Art Auction sponsored by the PTA. The quilt has the hands of 144, 6th grade students, each signed by the student, appliqued by machine and the star in the center contains the signatures of our Principal & Assistant Principals. Our school them for this year was Shining Stars. I choose the black fabric with bright colored hands to model the work of some Amish made quilts.

Lillie Ellizabeth Adler
Name of Maker: Patricia Hobbs
Lillie Ellizabeth Adler - This quilt honors my great aunt and is one of a series that I have made about my ancestors. It was also completed for the 2009 Bishop Hill challenge. Bishop Hill, Illinois was originally settled by Jansen Swedes. The first flower planted was the yellow rose called "New Providence," and it is still growing there today. The challenge stipulated that the yellow rose must be featured on the quilt and made from a bright yellow fabric. As my Great Aunt Lillie lived in Sweden around the time of Bishop hill's 60th anniversary, the theme of the quilt is designed around this fictitious celebration. Lillie was a good friend to Carl Milles, the sculptor, so the bookend image is one of his sculptures. The book on the far left of the desk contains my great grandfather's biography. The decor is typical of that era and owing to the darkness of the background, the roses seem to stand out. The desktop vignette does offer up a few clues as to my Great Aunt's identity.
