I began this quilt in a "Fabulous Facades" workshop with Gloria Loughman. It's based on a photograph that my daughter took while living in Valparaiso, Chile. I love the primary colors of the buildings, the strong shadows, and all the details of the plants and laundry.
Creating and attaching all the little 3D laundry items was probably the biggest challenge on this quilt. I used several different kinds of fabric, treated to reduce raveling, but still be somewhat drapeable. In the end, I discovered that cotton knit underwear was probably the best fabric for this, so I sacrificed some older pairs to the cause! I also used designer samples of real curtain fabric for the window coverings.
"Valparaiso Rowhouses" won a ribbon for "Best Interpretation of Theme - Wall Quilt" at the 2017 Pacific International Quilt Festival. It was also on display at the Junctures I exhibition at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles in November 2017.
