Stairway to Heaven

Featured item Stairway to Heaven

Sallyquilts
Stairway to Heaven - Wells Cathedral in Southwest England is my favorite of all the great Churches I have visited there. It is an English Gothic masterpiece built of local stone in the 10th through 13th century. This particular scene is of the stone stairway to the unique Chapter House. The quilt was designed using my original photo in a workshop with Esterita Austin at Asilomar in 2009. Called the "Heavenly Stair" and the "Sea of Steps" this aged and worn set of steps with its constant change of light has always endlessly fascinated me. This quilt was raw edge applique'd using hand dyed cottons and was further embellished with acrylic textile paints, Tsukineko inks and Fabrico markers. The free motion quilting was stitched with variegated threads. I was honored to have this quilt accepted as a finalist in Quilts: A World of Beauty at Quilt Festival Houston in 2009 and to have it travel the country as part of "Tactile Architecture" in 2010/11.
