This quilt was in a special exhibition at the Patchwork Expo in Lyon France 2006. The theme "Culture of my Country" was to give the artist the opportunity to showcase her country's particular character. I wanted to avoid the obvious like Mounties and beavers, so focused on the inevitable subject of cold Canadian winters. It took centuries for European colonizers to finally believe what our native Inuit people knew all along....that is, that the parka is the ideal garment for our frigid winters. I paid homage to Inuit art by quilting in some well known symbols of their culture such as migrating cariboo, snowy owl, Canada geese and salmon. Recycled velvets and rayon were perfect fabrics for the dense trapunto-like quilting. |
