The 2017 TQS BOM Halo Medallion Quilt features a stunning variation of a feathered star surrounded by multiple scrappy borders. As icing on the cake she has included flying geese rings and delectable mountain blocks. Once again Sue has created a quilt for you that is sure to be a family heirloom in your home.

This quilt will increase your skills and Sue promises that, while it may appear daunting, if you follow her instructions you will achieve success. And who better to share this journey than TQS member Carolyn Hock. Carolyn has made not one, but three Sue Garman BOMs. She says that Block-of-the-Month quilts are the best way to build your skills as a quilter. Each month, in addition to downloading the pattern directions for a portion of the quilt, Carolyn will be there with video lessons to share tips and tricks for your precision piecing.

Halo Medallion Quilt - Month 6

Available On: May 31, 2017

This month you will be making another border of half-square triangles. It is similar to the border you previously created except that the unit size is 1 1/2" (finished size) instead of 1" (finished size). You will also have to determine the size of the floater needed to make the half-square triangles stay square (instead of having to chop off a couple).

Halo Medallion Quilt - Month 5

Available On: May 1, 2017

This month you will be making a second set of Flying Geese Rings. After you make this month's units, you will add them to your quilt center after determining the size of the floater that you need to insert between the rings and the Evening Star border.

Halo Medallion Quilt - Month 4

This month you will be making a series of Flying Geese Rings. The rings of flying geese themselves are paper pieced and then set into their background units. You will only be making half of the rings.

Halo Medallion Quilt - Month 3

Available On: March 1, 2017

This month you will be making the Evening Star block border. Sue offset them so it appears that they dance around the quilt center. Before you add the Evening Star block border, you will also be adding another floater on the outside of the half-square triangle border.

Halo Medallion Quilt - Month 2

Available On: February 1, 2017

This month you will be adding a border around your Halo Star block, setting it on point, and then adding a "floater" around the on-point block. A floater is an unpieced border strip that is set into a quilt. Its purpose is multi-fold: to add a great accent color or print to the quilt, to cut a larger border into narrower units, and/or to make the quilt center larger so that a pieced border fits without having to whack off part of the border units. You will also be adding a half-square triangle border.

Halo Medallion Quilt - Month 1

The center block of this quilt incorporates one of Sue's favorite blocks – what Sue calls a Halo Star block. It is a variation of a feathered star block, but she turned some of the feathers (triangle pieces) around, which gives an entirely different look to the traditional feathered star block. It took some finagling around to figure out how to make this block without having any set-in triangles. Instead, by “deconstructing” the block into some basic units, you can easily make this block using paper piecing.
