I had exactly the same problem a month ago with version 8, i also bought mine a year ago. the "experts" helped and within a couple of days and i was up and running again.

Hi Norma -

Thanks! I do understand layers and it makes perfect sense. Version 7 does have layers, so should be sufficient for everything that I need to do. I am planning on trying a reinstall and will make sure to reboot beforehand. That's a good idea. I tried just rebooting when the problem first occured because that fixes a lot of things, but probably wouldn't have thought to reboot between the uninstall and the reinstall. I also know that I'll be needing to upgrade my laptop sometime soon, but really, really don't like Windows 7 so keep putting that off.

Nancy, I suggest you uninstall your version and then turn off your computer before reinstalling it. Sometimes weird things happen and this is the solution.
I don't know the version 7, but it's minimal what new things come in the newer versions. If your version works with layers you're good to go. Else I would say you should buy the version 9 or 10, because you will not want to draw on your quilts without being able to work on layers. Maybe this will not make sense to you now, but it will when you get more into the class. Good luck!

And I hope that you don't have any problems because your version isn't supported anymore, either. They are now only supporting 9 and 10. I never had a problem with it, even making Flat Rita just over a month ago, until now. And now it won't even open. I has to be a bad interaction with some automatically updated software since I haven't made any changes myself. I'll ask my System Administrator friend to see if she can figure it out, but it really burns my bottom that they don't support software for longer than about 6 months.

Lois - I'm also signed up for David Taylor's class in Houston, so I'll see you there! Even if I switch to CorelPaint, the concepts will be the same. And I'm guessing that David's class will be concentrating more on how to use it to design applique quilts, while I'm hoping to get more about drawing quilting design on top of the quilt from this class. But I could be completely wrong since that was just my guess.

I am signed up for a class in Houston so I did not do this one. In fact, I don't have it yet. I will be interested in what the rest of you have to say about Nancy concerns.

Nancy, I'll be interested to hear whatever else you have to say about Photoshop Elements. I am considering it and would certainly appreciate your opinion on any other thoughts that occur to you as well as your impression of version 10. Sorry you had a bad time with the help folks.

I have to say that I'm quite frustrated with Adobe right now. I bought Photoshop Elements about a year ago. At that point, they were on version 7. It has worked with no problems until I just started the class today, and for some reason now I double-click on it and nothing happens. So I went to the Adobe web site for help, and they won't help me. Their help chat area won't help for versions older than the one before the current version (they happen to be at version 10 now). For help now, I can only go to their "experts" which I believe are just users in the community who might answer if they feel like it. So, it looks like they expect you to just keep buying the new versions as they put them out, which is pretty frequently. Which, in my mind, makes this "cheap" photo editing software pretty expensive!

Sorry to vent, but I think others should know what they are getting into with this product. I was very surprised at the response and will seriously reconsider whether to use this or move to something from another company. Since I'm already signed up for the class, I'm downloading the 30-day free trial of version 10 so I can do the class. But I'm pretty frustrated at this point!
