TOPIC: What's the silliest thing you have done while quilting?

Re: What's the silliest thing you have done while quilting? 26 Feb 2013 13:21 #98035

I learn things several times, like when the right sides go together, they really mean it. Or trimming two different blocks at the same time is not a time saver. But the last quilt I made, I completely blew the math. I have A's in math all the way up to Differential Eguations in college, and on this quilt I discovered I couldn't do geometry, algebra, multiplication...and I could not even count!

I was quilting a piece for a friend that had a street scene. I thought I'd be really brillant and create a hanging basket suspended from a street lamp all in thread about 3 inches high. When I finished my little masterpiece I couldn't get the quilt loose from the machine bed. I took off the foot, the needle, the throat plate unsewing with my little seam ripper all the while to finally free the quilt. I discovered I had caught some of the backing folded twice underneath the stitchery!! It took what seemed like forever to pick out all those minute little stitches. I did manage to rescue the piece and complete the quilting--even recreating the stitchery. I had to do something to cover up the interfacing. ;)

I took my sewing machine in for service once without the cord. I must have been thinking at the time that it was a computer.

You are definitely not the only one. I did that and I live 45 minutes from the quilt shop. I was just going to listen to the class and take notes since I didn't have time to get it and get back before the class ended, but the shop owner (who is one of the nicest ladies you've ever met) called her daughter and had her bring over the machine that she was borrowing from her mother so I could use it just for that night. I'll never forget her kindness!

Forgetting to measure exactly how much fabric was on the length, before cutting into it for a backing - I am going to need to do some creative piecing now. At least I recognised that it is a batik and needs presoaking to remove any loose dye before it gets sewn to anything!

I once was wearing a long sweater and when I was quilting on the long arm my sweater got caught in the roll and before I knew it, my end of my sweater was sandwiched and was being quilted. uuuggghhhh.

Geneva and Ritzy, you can do it. Just take it one step at a time. I still have a white box around my name after 2 tries. I don't see it when I'm on my PC though. For now it doesn't bother me. And we're all getting new iPhones in the mail today. My DD has already informed me that our old account numbers will be needed before they can be activated as she has already tried to do so. At least I will have her to help me if I can't figure things out. As long as I can figure out how to make and receive phone calls that's all that matters. My existing phone doesn't work at our home in the country so the new phone will be nice to have.

Some of your quilting mistakes sound like mine. A couple years ago I was checking which machine I should take to a class that required some free motion quilting. I put the feed dogs down on the one I wanted to take but didn't have much success with it so I took a different one. Then I took the first machine to a day retreat the next day and spent 3 days paper piecing with the feed dogs down! I was wondering why the machine was noiser than usual and I was having a hard time staying on the lines. I didn't notice it until after I got home and started sewing on a different project.

Hey Rita, Ricky made you a quilt :D

I wish! Wouldn't everybody be GREEN with envy.

It is refreshing to read that other people have made mistakes too. Another of my all-time favourites (not) is to try to do decorative stitches while my 1/4" foot is still attached. I have lost count of the numbers of needles I have broken.

Same thing happens when you forget you have the single hole stitch plate on. I was so tired of breaking needles so I wrote myself a sign to tape on the machine so I couldn't see the buttons for it. It said: NOW YOU REMEMBER!!!
What was really funny was to see the faces of two of my sewing friend when they came one day and saw the note mounted. They had no idea why it was sitting there.
But it works.

You will have a hard time convincing me of that as I am trying to learn how to work with Windows 8. Can I just state here that I am NOT having fun with it?!!!

One good thing. You were able to post in the Forum. I recommend that you take a break and watch the new TQS Episode that just came out today. Perhaps it will work better if you take a break and have some fun. Here's hoping you can get that to work!

Wouldn't you think they could produce a programme that is simpler and always the same no matter what the computer - an open and shut case as it were. (Sorry Ritzy, I couldn't resist!)
