TOPIC: Who supports/ helps you with your quilting?

Re: Who supports/ helps you with your quilting? 16 Aug 2010 11:29 #49095

My husband is my biggest supporter, financially, lol, & in all other ways too. He is very creative also, so he understands, & he is so great with color & design, a graphic artist, & artist in his own right. He takes me to quilt shops, helps me when I am stuck on any design or color problem & is always there with his opinion & ideas, which is always, my choice to use, or not. I have a great online friend too, who is probably my biggest fan, & several other close online friends that quilt too. Others, who don't quilt, or don't even sew or have a hobby, they just don't get it, but that's their loss, right! Some just stand amazed, & wonder how I do it all, lol....

DH, DS and DD all support me in my quilting. Several of my wallhangings are wanted by the kids, but I'm keeping them as I love them all. We all have hobbies, My daughter and I knit and support each other. DH and DS make model aircraft and have half the roofspace filled with unmade kits, as well as alot of money invested in them. DD and I have years of spending yet to catch up with them. So we all support one another or tell them how much fabric/wool etc we could have bought with the money they spent on that kit! Lol.

My hubby isn't very supportive but not anti-quilting either. He doesn't want to hear about it and groans at the costs. I do have a Bernina 200 so that is saying something! ;) He knows I love quilting but isn't excited about it. He prefers dinner made at noon and something for supper when he comes in. :) (and the bookkeeping done... groan!)

My parents love my quilting but are 8 hrs away from here so don't see it much. They have several quilts of mine and I send them quilted cards (8x11 or so, fit in a priority envelope) and postcards occasionally.

My MIL loves my quilting!! Especially when I make her gifts!! :) We aren't close but tolerable. They live near us and she supports my showing at the fairs and is interested in what I do. Many years ago I made her a Carol Doak reversible vest and she LOVED it!! She came to our guild's quilt show last fall. :)

Our daughter is in fashion design so understands the love of fabric. (wonder where she learned that...) She is great at shopping at the LQS for my birthday or Christmas gifts. :) Our son (18 y/o) just likes having quilts on his bed. :)

Here is another vote for my husband! Also my daughters, who eye each project critically and put dibs on what they like. My grandson is only 1, too soon to tell! And my friends. I would do it without them, of course, but it wouldn't be near as much fun!

DH Mike not only supports my quilting, he helps with it! He does some of the fabric cutting for me when my hands hurt too much and he's gotten very good at unsewing. Actually, he's making his own first quilt but has gotten sidetracked by having to study to become a certified pharmacy tech. It's his 2nd career; he retired in April from the NY Air National Guard after 35 years.

My youngest son is my biggest supporter although my other son is supportive
as well. David always shows all my projects
to everyone who visits. He is still waiting for his first quilt though, so I better
get to that. Lol.
As they are both teenagers now, they are pleased I keep myself busy. Now if they'd just leave home so I could use their rooms for sewing. Oops did I really say that.

As I am reading everyone's posts, I realize we have all forgotten a very wonderful group of supporters that we all have: TQS members! If we have a quilting problem, want to share some good news, or just want to vent, someone is there for us! And, not just anyone! Someone who shares our passion and cheers us on! Go TQS members! I'm like Carol D I'm my own critic and my own cheer leader. No one around me quilts. I've never taken a lesson and you will never know how much I appreciate all of you on TQS--I have learned so much from you, and been so inspired. Thank you all

Della, Debi, Brenda, and the TQS community.

My sons are not actively supporting what I do, but they accept it, because they see that it makes me happy and (as they they) 'it keeps mother out of trouble' (whatever do they mean???).

Definitely my husband. He does not question when I come home with fabric to add to the bulging stash. Sometimes he will ask me if I got all that I wanted to, "because it may not be there when you go back." He is physically disabled so can not help with the cooking and cleaning other than rarely comments when the house is not clean or a meal is late (luckily hot-dogs are his favorite food).

And let me not forget my cats. After all, I am "Cat Approved Quilts."

Thank you kindly! :) I do go to a very small group here in the neighborhood that we call "Stitcher's Corner," and it includes scrapbookers as well as all kinds of needleworkers and quilters. They're always very complimentary of any of my projects that I show them. But honestly, I quilt because I enjoy it and it doesn't matter a bit to me if anybody else appreciates it or not, although it's certainly an honor when they do. :D So when I decided to take the money I'd started saving for a new car in a few years and spend it instead to buy my Bernina 440, I didn't have to have anybody else to urge me on. I was quite capable of deciding that sewing was more important than driving any day!! :D

My husband is definitely my biggest supporter. He is happy that I have found something that I enjoy doing and feel passionate about (especially now that our youngest is in university and it is just the two of us at home most of the year.) My husband is always encouraging me. Whenever we travel he always asks if there are any quilt stores in each place we pass and is more than willing to wait while I browse.
