Are any of you familiar with quilter, David Walker? I found his article on rejection a few years back, and refer to it off and on. It makes me smile now. I think we can all relate.
On a personal note, when I began my quilting journey, my friend whom I took my first class with (and her husband) would routinely remark how my fabric choices and quilts were "loud" or "bright" (you know that tone of voice that says ewwwwww). At the time, I was offended. As the years have passed and I allow myself to be me and create what is inside of me to be created (thanks also to Freddy Moran's encouragement), I have come to an understanding that all opinions are based on PERSPECTIVE. Perhaps most of you have figured this out long ago
, but when I did, it sure helped me. For instance, I LOVE red! Okay, to some it might be bright or loud, or say "power". From MY perspective, it says "happy" and "fun" and "alive".
I have come to understand that there are as infinite a variety of opinions as there are perspectives, as each of us has a different "come from". I was reminded what we were taught as children, that words DO hurt, and I purposed myself to always look for something positive to say about a quilt (or other creation), AND a kind way to offer my perspective, if asked. Note tongue bleeding here
I hope this link works. If not, google David Walker quilts; go to his site, click on "Quilts", then link to rejection article.
