Thank you Eileen: I subscribed to unlimited possibilities. When I went Mqx they gave a free copy of machine quilter's their sister. But I could not remember the other :?: Thank you again debbie :D My passion has been for the last few years has been the machine embroidery and quilting. The designs are unbelievable. Alot of what I really drool over  are the australian quilts, that are embroidered and then quilted, either traditional or white on white, comtemporary, well that is not really  my bag. I have two quilts that are from Jenny Haskins that I have to make. 8) I'm really excited about that. So thank you again. debbie

Debbie,
I subscribe to:

The Professional Quilter
Unlimited Possibilites
On Track(it comes with my IMQA membership)
Quilting Professional

That's all I can think of right now. I'm not home this week. I'll check again next week when I'm back in the studio.
I like them because they are geared toward people in business. I'm going to cut back on most of my others. The only one I can't ever give up is Quilters Newsletter.

I really don't like most of those retro fabrics. Especially the brown, turquiose, white combo. It's all over, even in clothing. I don't even think those colors look good together.  :x

I was talking to an editor of one of the Australian Patchwork mags during the week and I asked why they do not put the publication month on the magazines. Apparently it is because they do sell the magazines in the US and their marketing dept. don't want the magazines to 'look' as if they are out of date when they get there.

Now isn't that interesting? I think there marketing dept is out of touch. I don't think quilters look at magazines like that at all.

I buy the Quilters News letter magazine here and it never worries me that it is a couple of months old.
I purchase alot of Australian magazines, quilting and embroidery, when you do find them alot of what you buy can be a year or two behind. But their designs are so exciting and new that even a year can still be ahead of the quilting mags here!! Which can be a sin.!!! Debbie

I haven't been happy with the US quilting mags in a couple of years. But I will say one thing in defense of Quilters Newsletter-I met ZJ Humbach, one of their editors, at MQX last year. I told her that one of my favorite things in the magazine had been when they showed the homes/studios of quilters. There's now a one page thing every month with people's sewing rooms. Everyone is invited to send in their stuff.
I stopped my Fons & Porter, I'll not renew Quilt magazine. I'm leaning more toward the longarm trade magazines now. They have more information that I can use.

Eileen, could you post some of the longarm mags. I have been lookin, but I don't think I'm looking in the right spots. thanks Debbie

For me, the real problem has been recent fabrics. The new "retro" look -- if that's what it's called (Amy Butler, Kaffe Fasset, etc.) just isn't my cup of tea, and so many of the newer fabrics are of that ilk.

Sigh. I can hardly wait til this phase passes...

BethMI
Beth I couldn't agree more, the fabric reminds me of either mmoommoo's or curtain fabric, what's worse they are making clothes with these designs. I thought it was just me. Thanks I feel much better. Debbie

I get quite a few quilting magazines -- but have been letting some of the subscriptions expire, as the quilts aren't very interesting. I keep all my old magazines in boxes, and periodically pull a few out from the bottom of the pile to browse thru with a cup of coffee or when I can't sleep. Luckily, I don't seem to have a very retentive memory, so I get to enjoy them all over again...and at no additional cost!

Just to chime in and say the book, "Quilting Makes the Quilt" is such an eye opening book. I bought it before I really understood what a fantastic book it is --- years ago!

Highly recommend adding to your library.

Quilt Mags 13 Jun 2008 15:59 #19953

I too am bored with most quilt magazines..... and I do like contemporary quilts, old quilts, pieced, appliqued and art quilts too - but I like quilts that are original and striking.
SO....I really like the French mag - Quiltmania (yes, they have an english version).... great for inspiration as they show a lot of quilts that are "different". They print on high quality paper and really have great photos of quilt shows/events - and not just the US events but from European and Japanese shows as well.

Jenny,
My problem with the Australian mag is that I can't tell what month or whatever it is. When I see one in a shop, I usually buy it, and it costs about $5.00USD. A subscription would be great!! Can you put a link here?

Hi Eileen
as you can see Maureen has put up some links. have been unable to access my computer until now because of a terrible wind storm in Victoria that saw many of us without power for at least 48 hrs, so there was no sewing and no internet or computing but the upside there was no ironing or much house work either

One reason I subscribed to Quiltmaker is that they show the quilting motif used to quilt the quilt. Did I use quilt enough in that sentence?
Sandy, you could have begun the sentence with "As a quilter who loves to quilt, one reason..."

But really, there a several great books about the quilting design. One that really opened my eyes was "Quilting makes the Quilt" by Lee Cleland which shows maybe 8 or 10 quilts, each made FIVE times and quilted FIVE different ways!! It really shows the possibilities, and I think also helps us see that there is no "right" or "wrong" way to do it!
Oh, I just saw you were asking about magazines... I must not be very awake yet! but anyway Amazon has this book rom about $12 used and you'd get more info than 3 magazines! someone else will have to answer the magazine issue. I never can really remember one from another (except Quilter's Home, which I love!!) so I guess that says something about them too! (ok, I can tell Quilting Arts & the $100,000 Quilt challenge apart from the rest too, but they do take a unique approach!)
Good luck, Florence

Plenty of inspiration there but I need help quilting. I tend to do straight lines and I need inspiration to step outside the box. Hopefully Alex's podcast will help me. Is there a magazine for patterns or advice on how to quilt the finished top?

I really agree that most magazines are just trying to sell fabric lines. If you look at the quilts from most of the fabric designers, the design is all diamonds (Kaffe Fassett, for instance) or some other simple design. I'm beginning to think some of the designers are having a brain freeze! Maybe we just need to stop subscribing and start producing our own--or go back to some of the wonderful older books and create from them. I've got a wonderful library of my own and many patterns and I'm going to get back to those. (Thank Heaven for Sue Garman's wonderful BOM that many of us are working on--it's so unusual and beautiful. Just don't see patterns like this anymore.)
