I've been on a knitting craze lately. Started with someone in our quilting group wanted to learn to knit about 4-5 months ago. So I said, sure, I'll teach you. So I got all my knitting 'stuff' out and in the meantime my daughter sent me the web site for knitting helmet liners for the soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, so I bought some 100% wool for those and knitted up 3 of them during Christmas traveling. Then I made a really great scarf for myself.............then I hit a yarn sale at a great yarn shop.............now I'm knitting a sweater with it for myself. In the meantime, the lady STILL has not made it to a quilt meeting!

During all of this, I'm doing the BOM with Sue Garmen and tearing my hair out trying to figure out how to do all I WANT to do!  :)

 I've always heard that if you can sew a straight stitch, you can quilt... apparently, part of the sentence was left off. It should be "if you can sew a straight stitch while appliquing, knitting/perling, raising kids, taking care of hubby, working, cooking, cleaning, and basically being a master of multi-tasking, you can quilt"

That lady needs to get to a quilt meeting!!! That helmet liner sounds very cool. I've done a few scarves and bags, but never a sweater. I tend to go for smaller projects that I can get done in a couple sittings.

My Long arm janome 1600,"I call it a knee bar" it lifts the foot up and down (darn it) no wonder its been put in the cabinet, l just reach manually to lift my foot up/down, how does that help anyone,I'm puzzled on that one. I always thought it was for running the machine because I had one years ago that ran my machine. (I had forgotten what it was for) so I was abit confused!LOL

The knee lift bar would be helpful - no more need to reach behind the machine. I always end up with needle down & keep the foot down until I'm ready to feed the next piece in. If I had a knee bar, I could use both hands to feed the next piece rather than reaching behind the machine.

Glad you figured out what your bar was for!

I found out something about my janome 9500 embroidery machine too that I had forgot about, it has a "foot pedal too" to use for quilting. I never quilted anything but baby blankets on it and I used the automatic, the machine runs on different speads. I bought a long arm because the neck wasn't big enough for me to quilt on, I make mostly king size quilts. Plus the pins scratch up the machine. I had forgot about these two things until it was mentioned.

Do you have your long arm on a frame? I had one quilt that I left the center pin in the take-up bar and it scratched my machine. I was soooo heartbroken! I still cringe when I look at the scratch.

I knitt too but I only make wash cloths 100% cotton, I can make one aday. I've not knitted much lately, usually more in the summer months while watching tv.

I've never tried wash cloths. Since I don't knit much, I have to be reminded how to do everything

Imagine the cool designs you can make up when you're ON your pills!!!

I finally got my appointment with the ortho - apparently they don't think its that big of a deal - either that or they figure it can't get any worse  Appt is next Thursday, so I get to have fun with my splint for another week. Its starting to stink a bit, so we'll have to make a stop at CVS.

Then off to knitting tonight - I'm not a big knitter, so I'm toying with taking some hand quilting with me - though I don't hand quilt much either! Maybe I'll just gab & drink with the gals

Kathy - get your side bar out and check it out! Let us know what its for :-)

Kimber I work for United Airlines. I'm now after many years back on the reservation phone lines. But for many years I was a trainer and in between a supe on the phones. I called my supe job 1-800-Biach-at-me! :P I'm so much happier now working directly with our high yield customers and not handling someone else's irate. So sometimes when it's slow I can read my quilt mags or hand stitch.

I have been using my left foot for sewing since I broke my right leg on January 23. I still am not allowed to walk on my right leg. Being able to sew with my left leg makes the entire experience a little more tolerable.

Keep us posted on what the ortho says. I sure didn't like what he had to say and do to me. Hang in there, this too will pass.

I seem to remember a machine my sister had that the knee lift actually did run the motor - but it was a really, really old machine. I bet you & your sister had quite the laugh

Now I'm wishing my Viking had a knee lift!!!

When I got my first Bernina with the knee lift, I had to train myself to use my left foot; because the machine I learned on back in the 50's was run by my right knee. Who would think that after all these years, that instinct was still there - must be kind of like riding a bike! So I was having all kinds of problems as I was sewing along and lifting the presser foot at the same time :D Now I love the knee lift and my feet are ambidextrous (sp?) :-)

I've done the sewing with the left foot and using the right for the knee lift for years, since discovering the knee lift for my Bernina 830. Now i use it on my Janome 6600. Can't imagine sewing without it!

Was at a quilting retreat recently and only two of us used it! By the time it was over, we had several more converts! some of them didn't even know what it was for!

My sister was here last week for a visit. I left to go to work one day and she was going to use my sewing machine. She'd never used a knee lift, but I explained how the machine, including the lift worked. When I came home, she said, "Well I like MY machine alot better. I just couldn't get that knee thing to work. I finally just used the foot pedal."

When I asked why she would use the foot pedal instead of the knee lift when they did two totally different things? She said, "It wouldn't work-I thought you said the knee bar was supposed to run the stitching and that she kept pushing the knee bar over as far as it would go and the machine never would begin stitching, so she gave up on it!

She thought it ran the motor...........not lifted the presser foot!

We had a good laugh about it.

Thanks so much, Patti! I'm lucky enough to have my husband home to take care of me - and I work from home, so I don't really need to leave if I don't want to

I saw you posted you work at the airlines - NWA? Are you a gate agent? I travel for my work, so I'm at DTW a fair amount. How funny would it be if we've already met!

I'm excited to meet you!

Kimber since we live so close and plan to meet sometime anyway, please let me know if you need help. I'm not worth much in housecleaning because of my own disability but would be glad to drive you somewhere and I work afternoons so have daytime hours available. Have Toyota will travel! (altho I say it's so small I have to shake off my leg when I get out of it!)
