TOPIC: Episode 211...Beth Wheeler

21 Jun 2008 23:03 #20509

I'm late getting on this topic, getting caught up on the shows! I've had a series of quilts in my head for YEARS but I thought I'd probably do photo-mosaics, and now I'm re-thinking that! now, what did I do with those photos???

Also, re: the newspaper photos, I doubt this is the case for Mandy (unless the photographer SOLD the pic to the paper, which I highly doubt) but if a photo is shot by a staff photographer or a paid "stringer" photographer, then the publication owns the copyright, not the photographer him/herself. Sometimes even the photographer doesn't fully realize that, so they might actually give you permission that's not theirs to give...

I can just imagine your decision: New car or printer? New car or printer?

I am GREEN with envy. I can't wait to see what you do with it! Imagine the size of icon I could print with that thing!

I was so excited about the trip to Biltmore House because they always have flowers in bloom and I wanted pictures for Beth's technique. We were about a week late for the rose garden but there were a few still in bloom. Did find orchids and some other blooms in the conservatory. One think I don't like about Biltmore House is that you cannot take photographs inside the house. The ceilings are amazing and would be so inspirational. I'm not sure if they would let you sketch. I can't so didn't ask. At the motel I pickeup a booklet about Cherokee and their history. The graphic symbol on the front and back would make a great quilting design.

Wow, that's a cool printer! How will you get the fabric through it? Will you have to use your super-sized freezer paper? Is this all part of a big plan we will like to hear about?

Well, I'm sorta shy about saying - but I got an Epson 11880 and I only justified it because I'm going to be do a lot of other things for business purposes. - Sorta like those who get long arms and hope their work will pay for it. It didn't hurt that Epson was giving a $3000 rebate if purchased before the end of June 2008.

Carolyn, the glue is brilliant! I'm working on a photo of raindrops on hostas, and I could not get those panels matched up at first! The glue would have been a lifesaver!

I was having problems getting things to match up on the seam lines. While looking at the edges and trying to figure out where it should go together, I finger pressed the fabric back from the edge of a top piece and layed it on the bottom piece and got the lines, etc. matched up perfectly. A light bulb came on and said 'why not glue it in place before I sew it??' It works perfectly! I was going to use the stick glue but it was dried up so I took elmer's washable glue and put a very, very thin line of it on the bottom fabric out from where the stitching would be and placed the top fabric down on it lining up the stitching line and markings. When dry I opened it up and stitched. It came out perfectly. I don't remember anything being said about glue in the show but I could be wrong.

I'll chime in and say I was inspired by Beth's show too. It was shot in March this year and since the day we had Beth in the studio I've been all hot to trot for a new wide format printer (even though her vision is to encourage using what you already have at home) I wanted a wide format printer for a variety of reasons - one of which was to explore these techniques. Guess what is setting in my office now? I named it the Beast.

All your comments about this show indicate that it lit a candle under a lot of us. - Thanks Beth - let's go quilt!
