TOPIC: March Pinwheels

Karen I love your colors!

and Denise, isn't that what's great about geometry? So many ways to make a square, and so long as they're all the same size you can put them together any way you want! Very creative!

Finished March! Learning alot. Accuracy is an issue. Notice how thin my last floater is! ha ha

And I really am trying to be accurate! I just don't have such a close and personal relationship with my sewing machine as I should have. smile

Hey Keith -- technically we do pay for both sides of the fabric. Oh, well. We all have humility blocks. I could probably make a king size with all the humility blocks I have made. LOL

On a couple of my half-square triangles in my pinwheels, the background fabric is sewn upside-down. By that I mean that the front side of the fabric is on the back side of the quilt top and the back side of the fabric is face up on the quilt top. I generally don't want my backside on display... but I'm leaving the pinwheels in - they are my humility blocks and there will be more... If anybody inspects my quilt that closely, I figure I'm already ahead of the game... :D

Dear Denise,
I like your idea....and if you check out Sue Garman's website gallery there is a quilt, similar to the one we are working on , that has an all flying geese inner border next to a feathered star, very effective.
I am thinking of making a lapquilt using a feathered star surrounded by flying geese....after I finish this year's big project!!!

cheers

Okay...I NEED HELP!!! I finished my pinwheels, got my floating border on everything measures perfectly...and looked closely at my beautiful quilt and realized three of the four corner blocks of my 4 patches are sewn in "upside down", that is to say the darks are toward the outside corner. Don't know how I managed that, don't know why I never noticed it until now. Suggestions? Would you tear everything out or just chalk it up to experience and tell people I meant it to be that way??? UGH

I would walk away from it and then come back to it in a couple days and see if it still bothered me. Sometimes I fix things like this and sometimes I just leave it be. It really depends on how I feel about it after I give myself a little time away from the issue. It also depends on what I am planning on doing with the quilt after it is completed.

Leave it - it's your humility square. Your all set now.

pinwheels spinning 2 directions 11 Mar 2009 10:21 #33162

I'm with Keith. After whipping up several pinwheels, then laying them out, I noticed that some were going backwards. You really have to pay attention to their direction. It truly doesn't matter which direction they go, but they have to be consistent. Happy sewing!

Ritzy's right...it's just a 1/4" extra around the PP templates. It was a discrepancy that we caught, but apparently the PDF file wasn't changed before it was first posted. It's been updated now.

It is not going to be a problem--just allowing extra for lining up.

Hi Mom G...I just checked the first and second pages for the March pinwheels on site and it says cut 18 71/2" background squares. You can check it out by going to the BOM on the top purple line of the home page. I hope this helps. Nan :) :)

Pinwheels 11 Mar 2009 07:47 #33153

I'm a little late getting started on the pinwheels, but I started cutting out my fabric and noticed a discrepancy. Maybe it's already been addressed, but I can't find it. And maybe it isn't important. I haven't begun yet to cut out my other fabric. The first page says to cut out 18 7" (7 x 7) squares of the background fabric which I did. However on the second page, it says they should be 7 1/2" squares. Is this going to be a problem?

Yeah it's done and still using only fabric from my stash. Think i am going someway to achieving the scrappy look I want.
