Why are so many topics so timely? ha

I'm just finishing my first 'real' trapunto project and although it's fine for it's purpose (pillow shams) I approached it from ignorance (always a good place to start! ha).

I used several layers of my cotton/poly batting......so it's very VERY firm...did all my delicate trim on the back and then added my full size layer of cotton......and yes, they look great but as I said, they are FIRM! ha

I'm realizing reading this that wool would give the full look without the deeply packed firmness I've achieved! But they look good on my bed! :D

Learning, always learning, and why didn't I look here first? :?: Because when I get a 'bee in my bonnet' and an idea blooms, there is no time to reasearch.........ha Just do it!

:D Pictures of the pillows please.

Keith, what do you use with wool batting to stabilize a wall hanging??

I love, love, love wool batting also. And I've had no problem with bearding. There's maybe a tiny bit of bearding visible on the blackest of solid blacks, but I don't think that's a problem. And I can't really tell the difference between the tiny bit of bearding and Dusty's luscious hair that I can never quite get off. Wool by itself drapes so wonderfully and feels so good and looks so good, but wool by itself sags a bit when I hang the full-sized quilt on the wall. Just like I do now. And I don't think my sagging is a big a big problem either. :D

Terry, Good to see you in the Forum again. Missed you! I can't wait to use another wool batt. I have 2 small quilts to be used as throws and I think wool will be very cosy and comfy.

I too, love, love, LOVE wool batting. I've used it three times as a single batt and at least twice as a split layer on top of 80/20. It is easy to scrunch for domestic machine quilting like Lois wrote and it drapes so nicely around the body when you use it. I haven't had any trouble with bearding.

BJ, I just finished my GMFG quilt and posted it in What will you finish in 2013. Haven't gotten it into my profile yet. Waiting till I get a sleeve done and hang it. It was the 1st time I used wool batting and I love, love, love it. Wonderful to work with. Compresses nicely for DMQ. Best of all, it dries very quickly. The finished quilt has the best springiness. It will be my batting of choice from now on. The quilt store owner from whom I purchased it pooh, poohed it, saying it was too thick to work with and then she said I would have troube with it bearding. Has anyone had problems with wool batts bearding? I don't trust the woman's judgement who was giving me all that negative advice.
Lois, I love your quilt! Thanks for the info on your experience with wool batting. I'll let you know if I have any problem with bearding, but I would be surprised after I examined the batting closely. It does have a heat set kind of scrim on one side, which I put toward the back. I was very careful not to pull and tug it as I got it into the sandwich.

After closely examining my wool batting, I decided it was all it needed for this small quilt. So I steamed it and now I have it sandwiched with temporary spray adhesive. Looks pretty good. I like the evenness of the batting and the feel of it. I have never used wool batting before so keeping my fingers crossed I like the way it works.

OK, I have this Hoffman Challenge quilt that is a wall quilt. It's only 40" x 38". I would like to use wool only, but I want it to hang straight. Will a small quilt like that do well with just wool, or do I need to add my 20/80 cotton in the back?

Connie, it the batting is larger than the quilt you intend to use it on, cut off a piece and make a sample with different densities of quilting to see how the loft behaves!
