In 2010, TQS will treat you to not one, but two Sue Garman Block-of-the-Month quilts! Both quilts--one applique and one pieced--are bright and cheery, sure to be showstoppers on a bed or wall. Once again, Sue will offer lots of instruction and tips along with the patterns. Be ready: This is "the year of quilting" as Sue helps you enliven your quilts with many quilting options.

Don't miss out on the fun and learning available to you through the TQS BOM quilting community. Click here for the fabric requirements so you can be ready when we launch both patterns on January 1, 2010. (Word to the wise: We sold out our 2009 BOM quilts quickly, so be sure to get your 2010 kit(s) early by visiting the TQS Shoppe.) We are very excited to offer you this opportunity and look forward to you seeing your work as the year progresses.

OK Margo, I did my test stitchout of the January block. The photos are in My Profile. I used scrap fabrics and you can see the placement lines. I don't know what colors I am going to use.

I reved the 830 up to maximum speed once I got comfortable with the process and more confident with my digitized applique. YIKES! I don't think it would pass the quiet time rules here.

I just want to say that I'm on board with "Hugs & Kisses." I will be doing needle-turn applique because (1) I love doing it, and (2), I can take it to work with me! I purchased the fabric from my LQS, at a great New Year's Day sale! Good timing, huh?

Yes Margo I got everything to behave nicely and print out true to size. I have the 1st block all digitized and ready for testing. But I have to wait until tomorrow :( .

The Swiss have noise laws that dictate the hours of the day and days of the week when you can run machinery etc. that may disturb your neighbors. I live in a top floor flat and the eldery man in the flat downstairs is not well. It's Sunday and though these neighbors are very tolerant, I want to be considerate. The 830 embroidery system puts out some serious vibration when it gets going. I've been on a 3 day hiatus from sewing. Jan.2 is also a federal holiday here and today is Sunday...but tomorrow is a new day :D And I'm ready to go!

How kind of you to schedule your noise!!

In the meantime, enjoy that fabulous view you have!

Hey Libbi! I'm looking forward to seeing how the digitized blocks turn out. You are right....those Big Boys need to start paying for themselves!
I'm confused about your PDF files. Did you figure out how to get them downloaded at the right size?

Margo...my pdf file must have been corrupted when I downloaded it from TQS. There's the pattern as big as it needs to be when I looked at it on the site.

Did I mention that I have a new laptop too with Windows 7 on it? Adobe Reader 9.2 has been causing me major grief.

And no I didn't win the lottery or trade DH in for a Sugar Daddy--I just think the old laptop took one look at the 830 and decided to give up the ghost.

Hi Margo...I and probably Sue are going to take this one step further and do applique in the hoop. Why not? I've got all this techno stuff so I should see what it (and I) can do. I started to digitize the first block from the photo. That's going OK but I went to find the full sized pattern Sue Garman mentions in the instructions to print out but I can't find it. This will save me a few steps and better placement in the hoop. I will need two hoopings with the Bernina jumbo hoop.

Please help me find the pattern.

Libbi

PS. your color choices for the quilt are outstanding

Nope! It doesn't matter on those. On the straight stems of the "kisses" blocks, straight of grain will be just fine. The curved stems on the "hugs" blocks need to be cut on the bias, or cut out of one large piece of fabric as a single unit!

I'm curious. The stems on half the blocks are straight (no curves at all). So why do we make those on the bias? Does it matter on those whether you cut them on the bias, or cross-grain, or straight of grain?

Yes, the unfinished size is 12-1/2"x12-1/2" and each block will finish at 12"x12". Some of the applique shapes are VERY close to the seam line, so it helps to measure carefully before you stitch them down!

Hi Margo,
Thanks for the kind comment about my block. I'm just winging it through the process of digitizing.

I'm trying to figure out how close to go to the line around the block. The background of the blocks finishes at 12", correct? How close to the seam allowance do the appliques get?

Hmmm, maybe I need to study some other applique quilts, too.

Am I correct in assuming that we will square up the blocks to 12 1/2 inches?

Thanks for the time you spend answering our questions!
Susan

Thanks for showing us your methods for the machine applique. I have a question on how you folded your fabric to cut the bias binding. Can you explain more? This is one of the areas I have a bug of a time with.

Michelle, I think that the easiest way to cut bias strips is to start with a square of fabric cut parallel and perpendicular to the selvage edge of the fabric. Then fold two opposite corners together to make a triangle. The folded edge is then the true bias of the fabric, and I cut straight lines from that fold. In the photo on my album, the straight grain is on the angled right side of the fabric. The edge I'm preparing to cut, as well as the bottom folded edge are on the bias grain of the fabric. I had started with a really big square and folded the first triangle a second time to get longer strips. Hope that helps!
