TOPIC: Quilting a Bargello

16 Feb 2009 09:22 #32466

Sherry, I went on your blog and saw your son's reaction to the quilt. He sure must love you a lot. I have just finished a One Block Wonder very large California King size for my son. He hasn't seen it yet. ( I wonder if I will get a hug.) I really don't think they realize all of the work that goes into making a quilt. Judy in AZ

Judy, I'm very happy to give it up and glad it's no longer yelling at me from the shelf it was on! It's been a labor of love and a once in a lifetime project. I don't ever never ever want to do another one! Famous last words, right?

Miss Janet has my quilt on the machine! I went over and watched her work on it for a little while this afternoon-so very kewl! She even let me "drive" for a bit! I took pics and video so I'll blog about it when it's all done. I'm just flat tickled about the whole process! I feel like such a newbie! :P

That price is what my quilter charges. I have a King to get quilted. It will cost me a bundle as well. By the way, I like your new picture. Judy in AZ

So...seven months later I finally bit the bullet and took the bargello to the LQS. Janet's Quilting Bee. Janet is going to quilt it for me. Together we picked out a very light batting and a black backing. She said she'd have it done by the end of the month. She's going to do a meandering stitch in black. There were lots of oohs and aahs when she unfolded it to measure it. She's charging one and a half cents per sq inch. I said "Okee Dokee!!" That plus the batting and backing and it'll cost under $225. I'm very okay with that! :D It may be done in time for Matt's birthday. He'll be tickled...he's only been waiting for about three years for the darn thing!

Sherry,
Maybe a gently curved "s" line following the long seams. In my opinion, with a Bargello, the fabric creates the picture, you don't want a "look at me" quilting line. The black part that is the background will be the place to do something creative.

Maybe quilt 1/4 inch on both sides of the seam? Although to offset the lines, maybe something curved. I don't know the rules about things like that. Maybe one of the longarmers can give us hints. Judy in AZ

I really don't know what kind of pattern to use to quilt it. There are so many freakin' seams! I'm sort of considering tying it with red pearl cotton with the knots on the back. Then I go back to thinking about machine quilting. I have an awesome Pfaff 360 that could handle it. One thing's for sure--I gotta get it done before too long or I'm afraid I'll just keep putting it off indefinitly.

So, Sherry, what pattern are you going to use to quilt this bargello? I have one that is still a UFO, a heart bargello. Maybe I need to get working on mine as well, but then I need to get working on my French braid and my Affairs of the Heart, and my dragon trapunto for the DGD, and my flannel quilt for my son, and my One Block Wonder for my other son and my......... , well you know how it goes. Hey y'all! What a surprise this thread got picked up! I'm ashamed to say that after a year the bargello still isn't finished  I think I'm still intimidated by the big ol' thing. Just the thought of laying it out to baste it makes me cringe! I'd have to move all the furniture out of the livingroom! Seriously though...I think I'll give myself a Christmas deadline. Maybe that'll get my not-so-tiny hiney in gear!
