Ritzy, I am trying to wrap my brain around what you are showing in the picture. All the hexies I have seen have been made with their seam allowances either glued or basted down towards the center of the hexie. Then they are whip stitched together. I've never made a hexie, they just seem like so much work!

How did you make these without doing that?? I'd love to see the front of these too, to admire the lovely colors.

Oh my! I'm so impressed! My head is spinning, looking at those. Mine were arranged in rows, I'm pretty sure that figuring out how to press to one side would have exploded my brain. If I do a flower garden type quilt, I will remember this though.
PS those colors are so beautiful, are they hand dyes?

The seams on my hexies are open, I paper pieced them with whip stitching. I'm resisting hand quilting them but that might be an idea to consider with this quilt. I definitely need to watch the Mickey Deprey show.

Once I got going, they were fun to piece. The basting process was hard on my hands- I basted with thread rather than glue since I didn't want to wash out a lot of glue at the end.

I forgot to mention--I do not press my seams open on my hexies; so when I do SID there is fabric behind the stitching.

Okay my 2 cents. I think that anything becides stitch in the ditch would take away from the feel of the quilt. the other hexie was a totally different feel with the colors and all. The focus is the center and border.. Hexies is an accent. So for me I would either SID or 1/4 away from seams. I am working on two hexie quilts and deciding what to do once done. good luck and let us know what you decide. It will be interesting to see what yo decide to do.

Incredible isn't it? Such a refreshing way to think about quilting hexagons. BTW Kathy, I just watched the latest episode with Mickey Depre and she has some lovely quilting on her hexagon quilts too.

Kathy I have been thinking about how to quilt my hexagon quilt too, it's really a tricky conundrum! I asked Cindy Needham what she would do and she said that she would SID it. But because all the seams are openas it's hand-pieced and each side is only 3/4" I am worried that all I would be doing is stitching over my stitches and not the fabric at all! So I have a lot more thinking and figuring out to do on mine and I know how you feel. Have you seen what Geta did on this one:

I loved the quilt, but the quilting really pushed it over the edge! How completely incredible!!

Well, well! I just learned that hexies are 'in'. So, I see they are popular - wow!

...I suppose I began my hexies quilt about 7 years ago, and by the time I finish my project, maybe they will be out of style, but this gives me incentive! I do a lot in the car on road trips, all by hand. Maybe there is a road trip in my near future...I have no idea what the finished project will be - a pillow, wall hanging or a bed quilt. I've just been at it for years!!! I just loved the fabric!

Well ladies, I stitched in the ditch and mine was hand pieced. On one of mine I did flower shapes--hand quilted.

OMG! I love the quilting she did in that quilt!!!! I wonder if I could adapt it to mine. SID is out for me, it's hand pieced, like yours. I will sketch some wavy lines, mctavishing, maybe look at the flowers in the panel and borders.

I knew you all would be able to point me in the right direction!
