Wikipedia to the rescue:

First-foot

In Scottish and Northern English folklore, the first-foot, also known in Manx Gaelic as quaaltagh or qualtagh, is the first person to enter the household of a home on New Year's Day and a bringer of good fortune for the coming year.[1][2]

Although it is acceptable in many places for the first-footer to be a resident of the house, they must not be in the house at the stroke of midnight in order to first-foot (thus going out of the house after midnight and then coming back in to the same house is not considered to be first-footing). It is said to be desirable for the first-foot to be a tall, dark-haired male; a female or fair-haired male are in some places regarded as unlucky. In Worcestershire, luck is ensured by stopping the first carol singer who appears and leading him through the house.[citation needed] In Yorkshire it must always be a male who enters the house first, but his fairness is no objection.

The first-foot usually brings several gifts, including perhaps a coin (silver is considered good luck), bread, salt, coal, or a drink (usually whisky), which represent financial prosperity, food, flavour, warmth, and good cheer respectively .[2] In Scotland, first-footing has traditionally been more elaborate than in England,[citation needed] and involving subsequent entertainment.

Here is my New Year's Eve selfie (didn't know about the quilt thing in advance).

Bonus points: What the heck is she doing?

As far as I remember it is Scottish and is known as 'First Footings' and is for bringing good luck for the following year. Unfortunately I don't remember much else about it and DH is in bed, so I cannot ask him about it now, but will get back to you later on today when I find out (unless someone has time to google it) But pretty certain that whisky is also involved ;)
All the better!

Wow! It's been a busy day on this forum site!
Lois, loved your self portrait, especially the thimble. Ritzy you and your grandkids are so sweet and funny! Rita your portrait is very nice, it looks like you! And thank you for the singing. It made me so happy plus the scenes of Powerscourt in the background. It reminded me of the lovely lunch and walk about we had when my husband and I visited. Thanks for the nice memory! Wendy, you over achiever with 2 portraits. Both very different and wonderful.
I love this site because it gives me friends like you.
Now for my self portrait. Just since our move to Washington state my hair turned curly and I no longer had a job. So things are different for me in a good way. My self portrait signifies my new hair, the love of my husband and children and my love of quilting, friends, and life in general. Purple is my favorite color and my mouth is a tilted heart because I always try to speak with love and/or humor. It was fun to make, once I got out of the way of myself! Thanks Rita for challenging us.

Happy New Year everyone! See you on TQS!!!

Is that an omen of good luck? Sounds like a romance brewing, he comes with something to 'light your fire'. :woohoo:
