Yeah Lois, knew you would find the perfect solution... Keep on enjoying folks, I am, even just reading about it...
I am still hoping to get my dads quilt finished by Friday night so I could get it in the mail on Saturday morning... Someone gave me a wicked cold (I wouldn't actually go around getting it on purpose), and I wish that whoever gave it to me would hurry and take it back... So I'm now in bed with my iPad, a large pot of ginger tea and TQS... and will continue sewing on Friday - luckily it's goodfriday and it's a holiday here - 4 days of sewing... I better get rid of this cold it's making me feel way too dopey!!!

I've got first done and tried bringing back forward as binding but disaster so back to old faithful.

I am happy to report that yesterday went much better. I made two mug rugs ready for binding. The binding is cut, pressed and ready to put in place. I have a third one ready to layer and quilt. All of them are pieces practicing new skills. So you are my guniea pigs.

Now back to the "butt ugly" one from a few days ago. I am thinking about Limbania's request to be the owner. First of all, it was a practice piece for a larger piece on which I was working. I was practicing thread painting techniques I had learned at AQS Lancaster from Pam Holland. I was well pleased with the sewing but I was disappointed in my choice of thread color. ....Not enough value differentiation! When will I learn? Well, Pam said if you use cotton thread and you want to add highlights, or doctor up a spot you can do it with the Tusineko Ink pens. This is where the "butt ugly" part came in. I just don't have the same gentle touch with those pens that she does. I wanted to add subtle shading instead I got blotches of color. The good part is that I made a better color choice in thread for the larger project and the sewing improved too. I did take a lot of time with the sewing on the practice piece because I hate practicing on something that doesn't have a purpose. It's a waste of time and materials, and besides that, my skills are better when I know the piece matters. Limbania, I am thinking a few coffee stains will only improve its appearance so it will be on its way to you just as soon as I hand sew the binding. End of story!

Have a good day everyone.

I started pulling fabric and starching it yesterday. I would so love to carry on with them now - the ideas are starting to flow - BUT I have got to get laundry  & packing organised for going away tomorrow, for a week and I haven't touched it yet.

Still at least

Thank you everyone for your encouragement. You are right I am my own worst critic. I stew over getting things started because I haven't figured everything out. So I procrastinate. Part of my problem is a fear of making a "butt ugly" project. Well now that I slept on it and looked at it again I can tell you it's still "butt ugly".

Dear Loise, I so can relate to what you say. I do the same all the time.

That said, I definitely want that mug rug. It'll be my first mug rug and will always be special to me because it was made by a wonderful friend I got lucky to meet in this forum. :D

Lois, sorry that you're being "mugged" by the rugs! :D Are you on Pinterest? If so, there are MANY pins and boards for mug rugs, brimming over with inspiration. At first I was having trouble choosing what to do, but I figured out that if I just kept looking at the pictures something would bubble up to the top. I am having tons of fun with this! 3 done, to be mailed later this week. At present I am working on one for a certain Irish lass (who shall remain nameless! )

Half did my first last night. You're all right it has to be taken as a fun swap and all will be treasured pieced, appliqued or whatevever. Hope you think that when mine arrives

I googled mug rugs click link to mug rugs and some of the simplest ones are the most effective. Hope that gives inspiration if you need to be a bit less ambitious Lois

I have made 3 mug rugs so far. Each one is different - although two use a similar idea. I was all set to start sending them off in order but then I decided to hold off and see what they would all be like in case I got better as I was going along. I now think that's a bad idea. I made those first two with specific people in mind and did my best at that time. And I really like them.

I think we should try to keep the spirit of the mug rug in mind - this is meant to be a fun project where we share a little of ourselves with each other. They are not intended to be award-winning art quilts. They are not to be judged by their recipient, they are to be admired for being done and arriving and will take pride of place on my table with my favourite mug on top with a nice cup of tea and hopefully a bun or cake too! :D

So, put a smile on your own mug ( do you use that word to describe faces) and and make a fun mug rug. :D
I like this Rita. Make it fun...no stress.
