Re: 'Wot RoTT' exchange 13 Jun 2012 11:00 #82375

Sandy, here are the measurements I have used: 2 x 4 1/2" x 1 1/2" in background fabric for the sides of the reels; 2 x 5 1/2" x 1 1/2" for the spool top/bottom in whatever fabric you choose; 4 x 1 1/2" squares in background fabric for the corners of the spools. Sew the 4 1/2" strips on first. Then attach the 1 1/2" squares to the corners of the spool tops, draw a diagonal line and stitch on it, cut off the two triangles of excess fabric from the back leaving a 1/4 allowance once you are happy that they are affixed correctly, then attach the top and bottom of the spool to the reel. I find that putting a pin in the seam at 1/4" allowance on the top/bottom and the same on the reel helps to make the join more accurate. Hope that helps. :D

Terri, Hearty congratulations to you on the birth of Rosalie. It is a lovely name and an old name. My husband's family have a Rosalie back in the 1850s. A long and happy life to her. :D

As for how to make up the reels - we are using Edita Sitar's book Friendship Strips and Scraps. Hope that helps. :D

Thanks for the info, Rita. And no, Stitches, is not my real name but something that I use a lot...Sandy would be my real name. I don't have Edyta's book so maybe I can figure out the measurements myself when I get ready to use the reels. I just don't know what I will make with them yet.
Hi Sandy, here is a method for making up the reels (spools)http://www.quilterscache.com/S/SpoolBlock.html except the finished size of the thread section on our reels will be 3" by 4". I reckon that the wooden part needs to be 1" wide, finished size, which will give a finished block of 5" x 6". But you don't have to make reels if you don't want to - bird houses have also been suggested - see Rita's AAQI quilt a couple of pages back.

Not quite sure where to post this, but I know I have mention some places that I was expecting grandbaby #5 -
Well, I was so excited to get my reels from Rosemary, but 1000 times more excited to meet my new granddaughter today. Born June 12, at 6:59 am, 8 lb/7oz, 19.5 inches. Her name is Rosalie. I had never heard of the name before, but it's sounding so lovely and feminine. My DIL is a music teacher and wanted a 'musical' sounding name, so that's what they came up with!

Thanks for bearing with my excitement, but seems this is a good forum to share lots of happiness!!

I'm gonna keep the ideas about how to introduce a young girl to quilting. I loved that post!

Maureen, I have never been to Festival of Quilts in Birmingham so I don't know how to compare IQFOI to that but I don't think it was anything like as big. I mentioned on another thread that I took so many photos on my first morning that my camera chip was full so I took a few minutes to delete the blurred and duplicated ones ( there were quite a lot as I was rushing to get snaps of everything before rushing off to my first seminar with Mr. Tims.) Sadly my camera decided that as I was deleting so many it needed to take the decision out of my hands and delete the lot  after which the battery died! It is hard to describe how stupid I felt  and how disappointed. :( Then along came Angel Lotti and presented me with a memory stick of all the photos she had taken. :) As for the festival itself - well I am formulating a blog at the moment and will post all about it there real soon.

Meanwhile, having spent three days looking at inspirational quilts and listening to inspirational quilters I was itching to get my hands back into the pile and get going again. So I have made two more AAQI babies which I am off to quilt now. I will post a photo when I am done.

Whoo hoo! My package finally arrived. First I had to look for Rosemary's label. I'm a happy camper. Thanks to everyone, especially Rosemary and Lorna. Fab job. :D :)
