Lori - you're right - the thought of this project and the number of quilting friends who participated is enormous. Overwhelmed is a good word when we think of all the hands who worked to make this endeavor a success!

Margo - seeing the HSTs laid out gives us something to look forward to and to anticipate pressing when we receive our packages. It is all so exciting.

Debbie and Clara - you ROCK!!

SOTTS - we ALL rock!!

OK, Barbara! Here are 600 HSTs!!! :D

If sewn together like this it would finish at 40" x 60". I will be adding fabrics to it in a different layout, but need to match sets of 4 colors to make pinwheel blocks, and thought this would be the best way to see them all at once!

What eye candy!!

Happy dance all around!
My HST arrived today. DH was here to get it and brought it with him when he met me for lunch! The effort that everyone put into this shows. The HSTs are little treasures and will keep me happily occupied for some time. Once I'm done, the quilt will warm a loved one! What more can we ask?

Thank God for Debbie, Clara, Margo, Edyta, Alex, and Ricky!

You'll find me at my pressing station for the next hour or so!

I realized that I have not written bio yet, so here are few words:
My name is Satu, and I live in southern Finland. I lived all my childhood up in the north, so sometimes I miss landscapes and fresh air of Lapland. I live with my husband and two children. My daughter is 8 years and my son 6 years. I have been at home with kids and have been teaching some crafts (quilting among them) in the evenings, and been quite happy with the situation. My son starts preschool next autumn, so changes are on their way. I have degree on handcrafts, my main studies were textile design and weaving. I think it was about 1995 when I started quilt making. Maybe first quilt was before that. I made it of old bead sheets I dyed. I learnt quilting from Finnish translation of Quilts!Quilts!!Quilts!!! by Diana McClun and Laura Nownes. There were not many quiltshops here, (or internet) when I started quilting, so I had to use what was available. I did not know much about battings at that time, so I went to regular fabric shop to ask for cotton batting, because I read that it is better than polyester. Shop owner rolled her eyes and laughed at me: No no girl, there is not such thing as cotton batting, here is polyester for you. So I learned to use polyester batting and got so used to it, that I have just recently tried cotton, although quilting shops are now here and have different battings. I am a big fan of Jinny Beyer and have made couple of quilts following her guidelines on design and colour. I also admire Alex Anderson, because she is great teacher. I have only had opportunity to see her via web, but she explains everything so clearly. (And I am leftie too!) I love to try out different techniques, so TQS has been wonderful resource. I am multi-crafter: Besides quilting, I make jewelry (beading mostly), I knit, and I sew bags and sometimes clothing. Right now I am sewing summer dress for my daughter.

Satu,

I really enjoyed reading your BIO, thanks for sharing.

Any Ideas ? Can't wait to see everyone's.

Love your layout. Almost like a herringbone or houndstooth type check? very cool!

They're HERE!!!! Received my package yesterday and immediately opened it to see all the wonderful HST's. Thanks to everyone who participated and especially to Margo and Clara and all their helpers for the great job. What an undertaking!!! Thanks to Alex, Ricky and Edyta for their contributions. This was the first exchange I'd ever signed up for and it more than meant my expectations. Also particpated in the Batiks-R-Us exchange. There were 45 HST's from foreign countries, thanks to all of you who joined in even though it was expensive to ship them. The thing that was great was the fact that I didn't get any of my own back. Received duplicates from other folks but most of them were different fabrics. I think for the few that I got 4 of the same fabric I'll use to make pinwheel blocks to add to border. I also have at least four of each of those that I sent so I can add them as well.

Here's my bio. Born and raised in Fairfield/SuisunCity, California. Married 52 years. We have four grown sons, 14 grandchildren (7 boys, 7 girls) and 3 great granchildren (2 boys, 1 girl). We have lived in Anchorage, Alaska for 32 years (love this beautiful state). I started sewing at age 10 in 4-H. Made most of my clothes as a teenager. My first quilts were baby quilts for our boys. The most influential teacher for me would be Alex. Started watching her on Simply Quilts and was really upset when they took it off the air. I'm so glad that she and Ricky teamed up to do The Quilt Show. I'm always amazed at the tips I get from the shows.

Happy quilting!!!

I just took another five 'trash' bags to the P.O., now there's only about 8 more to go and I hope to get those taken tomorrow & Thursday. I'm still waiting on the package of Golden Ticket HSTs from Edyta, so those packages can't get sent yet. I don't want anyone to miss out on them, so I'll just wait. I will send her an email today to see if she's already sent them.

At the post office, they did tell me that because the packages have the 'to' and 'from' address the same, they are not having to do so much processing and telling me that postage I need to collect/pay additional postage. I sure am glad that we thought to do it that way! They are sending them all through and the P.O. on the receiving end will be collecting the additional postage. All of the flat rate envelopes should be good, it's just the other envelopes that are charged by size, weight, zip code that may have to pay more.

That way I don't have to send out emails asking for additional postage. I did have a few on Monday that I had to send emails about because the return envelopes & postage the member provided was too small to hold 600 or 700 HSTs. I had to put those in Tyvek envelopes and now I'm waiting for them to send me cash or stamps. There were four of those and if your's was one, then you would have already received an email from me about it. So, not to worry if you didn't hear from me yesterday.

i hate to say something negative but my worst errand is when I have to go to the post office. My PO personnel have the worst attitudes. They have no desire to be helpful and are very surley. They fit the stereotypic image of the angry postal worker. I wonder what the culture is like at the POs, it seems this attitude is very prevalent. I work in an industry that has a rep for poor labor relations too so I recognize it when I see it. Anyway I find mail in the mud too. But anyway Debbie I get it now that the HSTs were hard to handle and all the extra miles you went through above and beyond the call of duty was evident to me in a new light last night when sorting thru my precious stash. The squares were stiffer when I made them but going through many steps and rough rides to your house and the sorting place, they became softer and harder to handle quickly. Props to you all, it was an amazing feat! I'm overwhelmed at your rising to this tremendous challenge.

Thanks, Patti. A little spray starch and an iron will do wonders in bringing them back to life! And once you or your loved ones are cuddled up in the Friendship Quilt, you'll never know the difference  .

It's scary that your mail is winding up in the street! Is it delivered to a cluster mailbox or directly to your home?

I get deliver to my door. It was not my regular guy and I think it just slipped out of his bag when her went to get mail. Could happen to anyone I guess. Don't want to bash my poor postal guy. My regular guy is great. Hoping he brings me a package today. I may be in the last batch though. Not that I mind. I am surprised they are coming to people so soon.
Have a good day.
