TOPIC: Journal Quilts - October, November, December

December Journal (Challenge) 22 Dec 2009 04:28 #41364

I posted my December journal quilt which is the Fast Friday Fabric Challenge #39- microcosm or microscopic views of something and was to have paints and embellishments used in the process. Mine is "Tiny Bubbles in the Wine". Inspired by the internet picture I found of champagne viewed through a microscope. Seems like I have inadvertently hit on a theme because this one and #38 are both based on songs. December's FFFC will be posted on Christmas Day so I am going to try to do it in one week this time. I actually finished this journal in two days but didn't get it started until about two weeks after the challenge was posted. Ann
(p.s. FFFC is a yahoo group in which a challenge is posted the last Friday of each month and the goal is to finish it in one week, if possible. My goal is to finish it each month and in one week if I can.)

Thanks to all you smart people 15 Nov 2009 19:27 #40578

I have gotten a lot of comments on my Fish gotta Swim Birds Gotta Fly journal quilt. Thanks to all of you who gave me the words, title or source for the song. Now at least my brain sings all of it and not just one line. Being the non musical child of a musical family and then having musical kids I sing a lot to myself because no one else ever wants to listen and I love lots of kinds of music. It drives me crazy when lines run through my head and I cannot remember the rest of the song. But quilters and TQS quilters are the best and bailed me out on this one so thanks again to all of you, Hugs, Ann [/u]

Thanks, Mary. I used to love all the musicals and had all the records (33 1/3). I went to Amazon to try and find DVDs but when push came to shove, I couldn't justify the cost. Rather spend on fabric :)

I have been trying to remember the origin of the song but too lazy to google it. I think it's from Porgy and Bess. Anyone know?

Ann, I'm not a journal quilter, but I looked at your Fish/Birds posting from several days ago, and I can offer some help on the words to the song. Both of the choruses I belong to have this in our repertoire. It's "Can't Help Lovin' That Man" by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein.

Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly.
I got to love one man till I die,
Can't help lovin' that man of mine.

Tell me he's lazy, tell me he's slow.
Tell my I'm crazy, maybe I know.
Can't help lovin' that man of mine,
And I can't tell you why.

When he goes away, that's a rainy day.
And when he comes back the day is fine, the sun will shine.
He can come home as late as can be.
Home without him ain't no home to me.
Can't help lovin' that man of mine.

Now you can sing it to that man of yours!

I just put my November's entry into Show & Tell. I was fast doing the first three. Now, I have to get thinking about Decembers. I'm want to do something different. Jan

Well, I'm dealing with a bit of a temporary handicap: I managed to catch a proper flu virus, and then get bronchitis on top as a secondary infection. I have been feeling too ill to even stroke fabric, let alone do anything with it. I'm over the worst and will try and catch up when I'm back to normal again.

In the meantime I have had a super time just looking at all the Journal Quilts. It's great to see such a lot of variety, and they are all brilliant!

Ann - This quilt is so cute. I love where your imagination went on this one! Laura would be very happy with it. Have fun with the quilting. Carolyn in Kerrville, TX

Oct/Nov Journal quilt 01 Nov 2009 21:34 #40249

I just posted my "Fish gotta Swim, Birds have to Fly" Journal quilt for this month. It is larger than a normal journal quilt but it "told me" it had to be larger. I used Laura Wasilowski's fusing techniques. The quilting still needs to be done but I need to practice my freemotion quilting some before I tackle this.
comments are welcomed and appreciated. Ann
