"Afternoon Delight" was one of Sue Garman's favorite patterns. This wonderfully scrappy quilt is truly a delight to make with its combination of simple appliqué and Double Nine-Patch blocks and modified Shoo Fly blocks. Each month you will work on pieced and appliquéd blocks, and in the final month, you will assemble the blocks and add the outer border. The finished quilt measures approximately 86 1/2" inches square.

Let's use this Topic "Afernoon Delight Show and Tell" as a place to show off your beautiful blocks. That way, you know where to come to see what everyone is doing.

The topics that apply to each month are a good place to ask questions or make suggestions for each block.

AND when you post your photos to Social Media, like Instagram, Facebook, etc., use either of these hash tags so everyone there will be able to find our wonderful work:

Thank you Helen! No, the seams won't be pressed open...actually I have about 10 more nine patches to go and then I will start sewing them together. I will definitely use your suggestions for quilting and mostly stitch in the ditch I think. Otherwise I will never get it finished. I like the clear thread suggestion although on this quilt white will be fine. I live in Italy and have never seen Superior Threads here but I have been able to order Apliquik clear thread and it works fine although I am not much of an expert! I have to adjust the tension to get the stitches right. About stitching around the appliqué, how close to the appliqué do you stitch...right next to it, or more of an echo? Thanks for your helpI can't wait to see your quilt. You always have original ideas and it’s nice that you pass them on.

Ok thank you. Your quilts always look so well done. I have a hard time keeping in the ditch and getting the stitches not to show especially when the blocks are all different colors (although obviously not the case on this quilt).

Lynnanne, Two things about ditch stitching that are helpful: One, use the ditch stitching foot. Two always stitch on the side away from the direction the seam was pressed.
And it you don't want to be changing thread colors to match the piece then use clear thread or smoke thread. Superior is my favorite. HelenW

A question about the quilting fo Barbara or Helen or anyone else. How much stitching in the ditch should we do? I always have trouble with deciding how much to quilt and what designs to use and then end up not finishing at all.

Lynnanne, In the double nine patch, did you press any seam lines open. It is not good to stitch in the ditch if the seams were pressed open. The only thing holding the two pieces together is te thread. If you are stitching in the ditch on the thread your needle can break that thread and cause holes in your seam . After you answer if you pressed seams open. I can give you a few ideas on how much ditching you should do.
You are way ahead of me on Afternoon Delight I am only 2/3s done piecing. HelenW

Adding on, since I have the time. Density of quilting should be about the same all over the quilt.
If you outline the applique blocks, you could stitch in the ditch of all seams making the large nine patch and call it good for quilting those blocks. Or, if you pressed seams open, you could stitch a X over each 2 1/4
Inch area and call it good. You want to do a stitch pattern where there are not stops and starts if possible. If my comments bring up other questions in your mind. Just post them.

When I want to do quilting in the blocks I first stitch in the ditch all along the rows, just as I constructed the top. This stabilizes the top and allows many of the pins to be removed.

Do as much or as little as you like.

Show 2601 was the Introduction Show that first aired January 1, 2020 to kick off the year. My blogs are to supplement the designer’s pattern instructions.

There were no instructional videos for Afternoon Delight. My blog provides all the extra help that was offered. Usually the first of each month the blog pertains to the Block of the Month

I, too, was at the unveiling of Afternoon Delight in Houston last year, and immediately committed to making it. I finished the top before Christmas! This isn't the best photo; my husband's arms weren't long enough, and the color isn't quite true.

It has been a pleasure seeing all the photos. Thanks, everyone. Have a safe New Year's week. I look forward to downloading next year's BOM. I will have to get a new printer if I plan on participating. Mine decided it was done.

Margo,
The red is a beautiful choice.
Your quilting pattern is a perfect choice.
What batting did you use? The stitching shows so well.
