"Afternoon Delight" was one of Sue Garman's favorite patterns. This wonderfully scrappy quilt is truly a delight to make with its combination of simple appliqué and Double Nine-Patch blocks and modified Shoo Fly blocks. Each month you will work on pieced and appliquéd blocks, and in the final month, you will assemble the blocks and add the outer border. The finished quilt measures approximately 86 1/2" inches square.

Let's use this Topic "Afernoon Delight Show and Tell" as a place to show off your beautiful blocks. That way, you know where to come to see what everyone is doing.

The topics that apply to each month are a good place to ask questions or make suggestions for each block.

AND when you post your photos to Social Media, like Instagram, Facebook, etc., use either of these hash tags so everyone there will be able to find our wonderful work:

Barbara, would you put a link to your way of squaring up all the appliqué blocks. I have not trimmed one of mine yet and the time is coming. Thank you!

We are getting close, gals! I am finally caught up on all the appliqué and I finished all 64 of those darn nine patches. Whew! I am very proud of all of us who have committed to this marvelous quilt. I have learned things this year. I wanted to use just my stash. So, I did, and did not buy any fabric. Now I realize I will have to buy fabric for the borders. Happy to do so, to set off all this work.

MANY people have said to me "if I never see anoter double 9 patch..." So, you are in good company.

No, Sue does not have a layout diagram showing where she put each block. In my November 1 blog I will show full photos of both her original quilt, with the red border, and my sample quilt with the blue border, so you can see some ideas for placement. Sue says to layout the applique blocks with X's and O's alternating. Until I read her Month 12 directions, that had not occurred to me. I did my layout based on X and O blocks and color placement--it takes a bit of time to do. And don't ask your family for help until you get it how you like it and TAKE A PICTURE.

Also in November there are 6 applique blocks so get ready for a bit more stitching...

I have been following everyone's comments, but have been busy for a few months with other projects for people with deadlines, so I had fallen a few squares behind. I finally set aside a few days this week to COMPLETE the rest of the double nine patches!!!!! - previously I had 24 done. For me, this calls for a celebration!!!! (Might I add that I may not be the only one thinking, "if I ever have to make another double nine patch...." well, you can fill in the rest.)
After doing so, I needed a bit of inspiration, so I laid out the squares to take a look. Whew!!! Now I have to catch up with the applique blocks. My layout is a quick one; I still will need to balance colors, etc. Definitely scrappy! Thanks for everyone's comments throughout this huge undertaking. You all have some lovely blocks!
Question.... Does the final month clearly list Sue Garman's numbered layout, to easily tell where the applique blocks will go? I did my best trying to identify them by looking at the small photograph. Thanks!

Meegwat and kwiltsnblooms, I did what you are doing. It was easier to just stay with the nine patches all at one time. I'm going to prep my October applique blocks tomorrow and get them done, then briefly caught up.

Got my 64 blocks done. Found it easier to do it this way as I got into a rhythm. Now to finish my appliqué blocks

The photo HelenW showed is my quilt, not Sue's original layout. I will be showing that November 1 for those who want to lay theirs out exactly as she did. All of our fabric choices are different so most of our quilts will be laid out differently--the fabric placement will be most important for the overall look.

Sneak Tip--Sue put the heart block in the bottom right corner, facing IN. And her petals spin counterclockwise as you look at the heart.

Thx for the suggestion, but my quilt top is finished. Tm trying to find a fabric for the 1 inch strip between the 2 border fabrics. I had the pattern, so made all my appliqué In March and April. Boots 1950, It does not look like it would be hard to swap the heart block out if you used Sue's layout. It it near the right side. Just remove 3 seams back, make the new
heart. attach it to that double 9 patch on the right of it and seam it back in. If you are giving the quilt away, you will probably forget about it. If it is on one of your beds, you
will be reminded every time you see it. HelenW

Ckewing3901, I was just looking to see where the heart block was placed in the quilt, and I noticed the original one one month 1 also has the heart block
pedals rotating clockwise. Sue must have reversed it for the people doing raw edge applique. HelenW

Boots 1950, It is not too late. Keep your heart block as a sample, and make a second one for the quilt. The sample can be put on the back with the label and maybe
put the year in the center of the heart. Any time you wish you had done something different, if it is not too late to change it, do it. You will be happy for years and years
that you made the change. HelenW

Boots1950

I cannot take credit for turning the heart inside the October block. A post from another participant gave me the idea.
