"Afternoon Delight" was one of Sue Garman's favorite patterns. This wonderfully scrappy quilt is truly a delight to make with its combination of simple appliqué and Double Nine-Patch blocks and modified Shoo Fly blocks. Each month you will work on pieced and appliquéd blocks, and in the final month, you will assemble the blocks and add the outer border. The finished quilt measures approximately 86 1/2" inches square.

Let's use this Topic "Afernoon Delight Show and Tell" as a place to show off your beautiful blocks. That way, you know where to come to see what everyone is doing.

The topics that apply to each month are a good place to ask questions or make suggestions for each block.

AND when you post your photos to Social Media, like Instagram, Facebook, etc., use either of these hash tags so everyone there will be able to find our wonderful work:

Okay thanks for that, not sure if they would have been smaller than 6" and I find 4" blocks a bit too small for me these days lol lol

We need to keep a little suspense for January. They are larger than 6”, smaller than 9”. How’s that?

Hi Judith, I know Barbara answered your question, but I thought I would just reply as well. First, I'm so sorry for your losses. I hope you can find healing while sewing in community, even if we are separated by distance. It's been a while since I've done a BOM quilt, and I'm looking forward to this one too. I've got a whole stash of fat quarters to go through. If you haven't done one of the BOMs, they always start with an introduction to give what kinds of fabrics and how much of each is needed, probably some time in December. I always get a notebook and print each month's instructions out so I can quickly refer back to it. (Besides, as a librarian, I just love office supplies! So it's a great excuse to find a pretty notebook.) I look forward to seeing what you choose. Batiks would really be pretty. I'm waiting to see how much of that main/background fabric we need before making any decisions.

Judy, I am so sorry for your difficult losses. I can’t imagine what you have been going through. So glad Afternoon Delight will help you in 2020. Yes, the pieces are small, the little squares are .75” finished. You will want small prints for those. The appliqué blocks have larger pieces but are not large. Don’t want to give too much away but I hope this helps you. I look forward to watching your progress.

Barbara,
This is the first sewing project that has roused my interest in quite a while. My husband died unexpectedly this year and my son died of cancer 6 weeks later. I haven't sat down at my sewing machine since the night before my husband died. The 2020 BOM has got me interested in quilting again.
I thought I wanted to make Afternoon Delight from reproduction fabrics, but I am having second thoughts - mainly because I don't know how small the pieces are in Afternoon Delight. I like to use small scale fabrics in small pieces, because I like to clearly see the block designs. If I am going to put a lot of work into intricate sewing, I want to clearly see it. That is just me.
I ordered two fat quarter collections of reproduction prints. They arrived this week. One set has small motifs. The other set has larger motifs - not medium scale, but larger than small scale.
It would help me a lot in choosing fabrics to have an idea about the average size of the pieces and/or the blocks. For instance, are the finished nine patch blocks 3" or smaller? If the pieces are really small, maybe I would be happier making the quilt of fabrics that read as solids. Or maybe using batiks or hand-dyes? I do know for sure that I am not ready to sew with happy, cheerful fabric yet.

I also want to congratulate Barbara and her talented sewing group for making a beautiful rendition of Afternoon Delight. This quilt has also been on my bucket list and I bought the pattern from Sue Garman a few years ago. This will give me incentive to finally make this quilt.
Thank you Barbara for all your help with all of the other BOM’s here at the Quilt Show. I love to read your blog and always look forward to it in my email.

I am so excited to start the 2020 BOM. I could hardly believe my eyes when I watched the reveal on Facebook, as this really is one of my favourite Sue Garman patterns. I'm still deciding on fabrics and probably wont make my final choice until we have the first pattern. Beverly you are right it will be a Quilting Bee at its best.
