Join us on a TQS exclusive 12-month historic journey recreating the historic Rajah Quilt, sewn by women convicts on board the ship Rajah traveling from England on April 1841 to the penal colony of Van Diemen's Land-now known as Tasmania. The original quilt measured at approximately 128" x 128", but Lessa recreated it in quarter scale with fabrics from her stash. She used many different scraps, imagining that's what might have happened when the original quilt was being made. She followed the colors of the original quilt loosely, and tea dyed fabrics that didn't look old enough. You can obtain the same look with reproduction fabrics, or make a more contemporary-looking version like the one created for TQS.

PosyP OFFLINE Posts: 4106 Thank you received: 361	Great looking top so far, Peg As for using a clapper for getting seams nice and flat (smacks hand to head) I really should have remembered that, it is a tool that I was introduced to years ago when I started tailoring and is used to aid pressing garments without scorching them.

I finished month 4. I'm so glad I read forum comments about the gray border before I started as it prepared me to be more careful when cutting and sewing. I made the outer square-in-square borders first to be sure I got to the ending measurement, then cut the gray border 1.25 inches to give me the finished 3/4".
It all worked out OK thanks to the heads up.
FYI- I just got back from MQX (machine quilters expo) where I bought a Clapper- solid wood block that you lay down on top of a seam you've just ironed (steamed or spritzed). Wood absorbs the moisture and weight presses down. Seams come out FLAT! With all the seams in the border for month 4 (and more coming) I'm definitely going to be using my clapper to get a flatter, more finished look.

glacerda OFFLINE Posts: 145 Thank you received: 74	Month 4 finished. My grey floating boarder needed to be 3/4" and the entire piece measures 30 1/2" x 30 1/2" from raw edge to raw edge. Happy with the results.

glacerda OFFLINE Posts: 145 Thank you received: 74	I think the reason for trimming the gray border down after attaching it to the center is so the pieced border will fit well. The gray border is just a floating border that can be cut any width needed to accommodate the pieced border so that it will fit.

I had already precut the borders so I sewed them on and then trimmed. It would have been easier if the correct measurements had been given. Just glad it's done. I am behind you all and am still working on my center, but I am fearful of continuing pending that correct way to do this so I have the correct dimensions. Is there a Moderator who could help?
