So, what was the answer? I have the V6 software so I don't have a need for Artlink. However, I was intrigued by your question and did not know the answer. I'd really like to know what you found out. Thanks!

I have a Bernina 440QE and ART Design Version 1 for embroidery. I don't use the embroidery much and most likely never will.

I just now see Bernina has a free download of ArtLink 6

What would I gain by downloading this and, if anything, what would I lose?

From what I have read at various websites it appears that ArtLink 6 has no fonts and can't combine designs

Would I be able to use ArtLink 6 independent of ART Design Version 1? Or once downloaded do I lose ART Design Version 1?
