Rosemary, congratulations on receiving Highly Commended for your Hawaiian Haycorns--what a beautiful miniature quilt--I love the simplicity of the colors and material juxtaposed to the detail of the design. So happy for you, so well deserved! Enjoy Birmingham next week! :)

Thanks to Wendy posting, I've only just found out about my latest Highly Commended. That has made my day, and I look forward to going and gloating over it on Saturday.

Marilyn, both the fabrics are tapa cloth - bark cloth. The white is from Hawaii and I think the brown is from Africa. The real advantage of using it is that it doesn't fray and didn't need turning under :P My own design, been contemplating it for well over a year, but only got started on it about 6 weeks ago

On Fb I did see that someone else had submitted a Hawaiian style mini quilt, but hers was a copy of the Aloha quilt by Jennifer Chavrini (sp?)

By the way, Maxiaiture is being entered into The Great Northern Quilt Show -for the free entry ticket of course ;) I admit to doing a bit of 'make up' work on the stitches, as Lorchan told me that some people do for a more polished/finished look, and it does add to its/her looks.

Doing a happy dance :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

That's pretty stiff competition. Rosemary...It's wonderful ! ...I'm puzzled over the fabric used ...the weave structure in the
brown seems strange to me. How did you control it? ( I'm gonna call it "oak leaves and acorns" :P )

You'll enjoy a display there by a Japanese quilter of miniatures.

Got nowhere this year at FoQ :( Phillipa Naylor was in the miniatures group as well (again) and ended up with best in show. Feeling right down in the dumps, holiday was not warm and we only got out in the canoes once (DH didn't like the look of the access points to the river Wye at the campsite).

Yesterday was the Colorado State Fair judging and I now have a good photo of another quilt I entered. I love the website KISS Quilts by Marlene Odie near Grand Coulee Dam. She originally designed this for an EQ7 competition and later posted on her site the free tutorial. She gave me lots of great advice. I did put a little spin, pardon the pun, on my quilt. Try as I might I couldn't get the dang points to meet nicely in the middle, so I made a smaller paper pieced version of the spinners and did a set-in circle, which is a tutorial on TQS and it looks great.

So back to the judging. I received a BOS in the senior division for the applique quilt. I put the spinner in the pieced class with 5 other quilts and it got a first. The spinner also received Best Use of Color award. So I am very pleased.

Hi Marilyn -

I've gotten a couple of little pictures of Lance (my dog) done at Spoonflower. The fabric is very soft, but I haven't tried hand sewing. You can get a little test print for just $5 (and the first one is free). You have to do some test prints to get the colors right, but you can find uses for those. They have a bunch of different fabrics to chose from so I would suggest doing a couple of test prints trying different fabrics and playing with the colors of your photo.

Hi Marilyn!
I've been gifted a couple pieces of Spoonflower fabrics, both very pretty and machine sewed great!. (Camp style shirt and peasant style tops). However hand sewing a couple crafty flower style hair bows was difficult.
