DebbiG, white and cream can work together. I would try to keep them pretty close--so not bright white and almost tan/cream. But it's your quilt, so you get to decide.
One of the things I love most about antique quilts is how they "used what they had" especially in pieced quilts. Everything worked because that is what they had. Today's quilters will spend two weeks searching the internet for a fat quarter of the exact fabric they have run out of.
Alex says "all greens go together" or any other color family. A neutral is a neutral is a neutral. If you like it, it works.
I personally luv white and cream but they can be tricky. I chose an old fossils and ferns fabric that is very light and has a hint of peach which works with my orange focus fabric.

And second question - background fabric suggested by Alex for the Mystery Quilt is to be a white. Do others think it will work to have a range of whites/creams? Making the most of my stash is one goal for this project. Thanks.
