Do you find that the mathematics of quilting make you run screaming from the room? Fear no more! Designer, teacher and lecturer Lynn Wilder has found a way to make “Patchwork Math” palatable for all of us. While visiting at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles, Lynn explains:

  •  A system for breaking down quilt designs into smaller components,
  •  How to make complex projects much more manageable and accessible.
  •  A combination of grid units and various tools makes the daunting become doable.
  •  Unique methods for auditioning fabrics and for creating order.

You’ll also meet Aussies Helen Stubbings and Tracey Browning, who share a smart and cool method for making iron-on hexagons. Bring it on!

Brighten someone's day with a pair of charming fabric birds (from Jennysbuttonjar) you can whip together in under an hour.  The toughest part will be deciding what color paper clip feet you want to make.

If you loved the tips Lynn Wilder shared for taking the scary out of quilting, we think you will enjoy these other fabulous teachers.  Each shares tips that will improve your skills.

Jacqueline de Jonge shows you how to let the paper do the work for you (Episode 911).

Pat Yamin shows you how to accurately cut four layers for a pattern, tips on

avoiding template slippage, and other time-saving tricks. (Episode 1005).

Create a roadmap to improve accuracte piecing with Alex's super-easy trick, using painter's tape (Episode 1307).

Lee from Freshly Pieced is sharing her first tutorial for We All Sew. In it she shows you how to make and attach a quilt hanging sleeve to the back of a quilt with almost no hand-stitching. (Almost!) That got your attention, didn’t it?

You’ll need a few different presser feet for this technique:

  • Walking foot, such as BERNINA Walking Foot #50 with the edgestitch sole attached, or a sewing machine with Dual Feed and an all-purpose foot (such as BERNINA Reverse Pattern Foot #1D)
  • Blindhem foot, such as BERNINA Blindstitch Foot #5, which is a standard accessory with many sewing machines. Check your sewing machine guide to see if your machine has one, and which stitch is the blind stitch or blind hem stitch.

Lee's tutorial is based on this excellent video by Felisa Quilts. But since the video is captioned in Japanese and all the measurements are in centimeters, WeAllSew asked her to break it down in English and inches. Check out the video anyway, to further illustrate how this works!

This tutorial is for a 4″ hanging sleeve; it's a bit larger than the one shown in the video, but it is standard for many shows here in the U.S.

The San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textile's theme for FiberShots this year is "Embellish Your World."  Is your world full of flowers? Ocean? Mountains? Or abstract shapes and forms?  Is much of your world virtual? Whatever inspires you, they hope you will translate it into a 16" square for FiberShots. The deadline for submission has been extended from February 20 until February 27.

This year they will have a reverse auction, with prices beginning at $300. After three weeks, all remaining FiberShots will be $150, and in the final weeks, $75. Museum members will have the first opportunity to purchase before the opening reception of Common Threads, on March 15.
