Karen spent one year creating and applying the appliqué to Majestic Mosaic and then Renae spent a year doing the machine quilting. All that work paid off as it won Best of Show at AQS Paducah in 2015. This was the second time that Karen and Renae collaborated. They won BOS previously with their quilt, "Fiesta Mexico." And this LEGO Mindstorms NXT Loom Machine created by Tomasz Zając is proof. It was selected by LUGPol (Lego Users Group of Poland) as the best LEGO creation in 2013. Maybe we will see a sewing machine soon.

From Karen's website:

This exuberant hand-appliquéd quilt was inspired by the nineteenth-century German textile designer Friedrich Fischbach. Karen cut each piece for the center motif and arranged it on a design board before beginning to sew so she could make changes easily. After the center was stitched, she selected the fabric for the edge and designed the border using elements from the center. The quilt also includes reverse appliqué, piping, and more than 400 circles. Karen says, "I love making circles, but quilting around each one is another story!"

Melissa Sobotka is a relative newcomer on the quilt scene, but this multiple award-winning quilter has taken the quilt world by storm with her photo realistic style. Using a photograph as inspiration, Melissa, like a master painter, transforms a blank fabric base using hundreds of tiny pieces of batiks. Depth is created with inks and other medium until the resulting quilt emerges in all of its glory. Melissa gives tips for selecting fabrics to achieve realism and details how tools from the art world can add life to your fabric image.
 
Also in this show, Alex shares the ins and outs of pinning and why the pins you select can make a real difference in your piecing results.
