In our Quilt Roadies and Anna & G On The Road journeys, we are blessed to meet many quilters, travelers, quilt shop owners, and designers. Joyce Weeks of Geoff's Mom Pattern Co. is a stand out memory. (You can check out the video on Quilt Roadies from 2 years ago.) I have always been a fan of her designs which pull at the heart strings, memories, and dreams. Her designs also live in my someday pile! (I have decided to stop calling it a UFO pile...it is now my "Someday Pile"!) When I got a call that she would be visiting The Bee Hive, I was over the moon!!! Straightened up The Bee Hive...and, lucky for me, it was a regular stitch day for the Sew 'n So friends who could bring their stitching over for a little Stitch Bee. What a lovely day...a lot of conversation, a bit of stitching and a walk to The Stitchin' Post.

Caught up with Joyce's life both personal and professional. There will be big news on both horizons which you can check out in a future Quilt Roadies video. I was bummed though, that this year I can't make the Quilt St. George...WOW...what a great retreat and so reasonably priced. But, next year I am going to put this event on my calendar!!! It is a full time job to keep track of these designers and retreat possibilities...maybe that is why I don't get anything done!!! LOL...it's their fault!!! Every once in a while a "simple" traditional-style quilt just knocks our socks off. This is one of the quilts. Memories of Hailey, by Sharyl Schlieckau of Loganville, WI, uses repeated blocks on point and absolutely stunning quilting to fill the blank spaces.

Sharyl designed and pieced the quilt front when her dog, Hailey, was just a puppy. Hailey always stayed with Sharyl in her sewing room, including during the dog's last days before she died of cancer.

“She saw every stitch, because she was by me every day,” Schlieckau said.

The quilt was photographed at AQS QuiltWeek Spring Paducah 2018. Sharyl has competed at Paducah about ten times.

Dates: Friday-Wednesday, August 24-29, 2018.

(NOTE: Tickets are no longer available for Friday's taping.)

Two shows are taped each day. Attending the entire day is required.

Free tickets are offered on a first come, first served basis.
  Send us an email with the words Taping Ticket in the subject line. 

Please provide the following information in your email:
          Full given name (as listed on a Govt. ID) of each person in your group
          Profile name (if existing member)
          Email address
          Preference of day you would like to attend

All requested tickets MUST be used. Please do not request tickets if you are not committed to attending. Seating is limited to 60 and we do not overbook the seating area, so unused tickets result in empty seats, which diminishes the energy of the show and denies someone else the opportunity to attend. If you have reserved tickets that result in a "no-show" or "partial-show," you will not be eligible for tickets to future show tapings. You do not need to be a member of TQS to attend.

Tickets will be distributed for only one day of attendance. Confirmation of tickets will be in the form of an e-mail document.

Some of the most visually stunning quilts are the result of combining traditional patterns with unique, artisan fabrics. 

 
Our 2017 BOM Halo Medallion Quilt in Batiks is just such a quilt- a traditional pattern with the added twist of batiks in unique but absolutely luscious colors. This kit was assembled especially for us by Island Batiks after they saw the original Halo Medallion quilt and were so inspired by it that they wanted to create a version in their own traditionally made batik fabrics.

Island Batik fabrics are made in Bali, Indonesia using the traditional method of stamping of wax onto the fabric, dyeing, washing and drying. The fabric is left out in the rice fields, where good sunlight is essential to ensure strong color and color fastness. Island Batik employs 80 to 100 community members to transform the white base fabric into their lovely dyed fabrics, and then roll the fabric by hand onto recyclable cardboard bolts that are also made within the community.

During a taping with Ann Shaw last year, Lilo fell in love with one of Ann's quilts. Needless to say, once it came down off the wall of the studio, it ended up in Lilo's suitcase...don't worry, it was all completely legal.

Ann writes about the quilt:

Dogwood (2012,  52 x 35)
This quilt celebrates the glorious wild flowering dogwood trees that bloom each spring throughout Virginia. The tree’s actual flowers are the small yellow-green clusters. What appear to be large showy white petals are actually specialized leaves called bracts that help attract pollinating insects to each yellow-green petal clump. The dark purple fold on the edge of each branch is a charming surprise among the mass of blooms.

Ann writes about her quilt, Abstract Brain, "The logo for the Krasnow Institute (a brain and cognition research Institute with which I am professionally affiliated in as an anthropologist) is a line drawing abstraction of a brain. I loved the challenge of translating this logo into a quilt. Based primarily on fence rail blocks, I matched each block to the grid of the logo’s design. Presented to the founding director, this quilt is now on permanent exhibit in the lobby of the Institute."
