Amidst shouts of support and enthusiasm and a plethora of oohs and ahhs, Libby Lehman, MC for the Awards Ceremony for the 23rd Annual Show and Contest, announced the winning quilt. Sharon Shamber, of Payson, AZ, has won the $20,000 Best of Show for the second consecutive year - a first!

Sharon's quilt, Flower of Life is created with hand-dyed fabrics and detailed applique, trapunto, and hand-corded binding. The intricate precision longarm quilting adds shadows, texure, and design elements to this original design.

Also among the big winners of the night are:

AQS Best Hand Workmanship $12,000
Organic Garden, Bonnie Keller, Chehalis, WA

Bernina Machine Workmanship Award
Buckskin, Marla Yeager, Ava, MO

So here we go, from top row left to right.

Hey Gang! I'm en route to Paducah, Kentucky for the annual show and contest that starts with the Awards Ceremony on Tuesday night. I'll post some news about the awards immediatly following the event - so plan to check the blog later that evening or early Wednesday morning for all the scoop.

Justin and I will be manning the Tims Art Quilt Studio booth. Please plan to stop by and say Hi -but you know that means to use our code phrase, "It's a new day!". In case you missed this week's newsletter, check it out. There is information on making an identifying name badge so other World Quilt Community members can recognize you. Don't forget to greet them with the secret password - "It's a new day!"

Does anyone have any special memories to share about past AQS shows?

I am basking in the glory of Sisters OR with Jean Wells and her wonderful posse. Together we are team teaching the Spontaneous Quilt Design Retreat at the NEW Five Pine Resort / Spa and Conference Center. Let me tell you - it's a tough job, but someone has to do it! We have challenged the students to step out of the box and guess what??!! THEY ARE! Check out Jean and Valori's fabulous quilt which graces the entrance into the conference center. I am itching to go home and create!!! But isn't that what is it all about?

Quilt top originally pieced by Betty (Lisa's mom) who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's while she was working on this quilt top. Lisa asked me to rework the top because of the condition of the top and I agreed. I pulled the top apart and resewed all of the pinwheels. Then I added the original red border and pieced the outside border with leftover pieces of the original. Finally, I quilted the top after taking several machine quilting classes and doing several smaller projects. This was the first large quilt that I had machine quilted. Lisa's mom is in the final stages of Alzheimer's but Lisa has a quilt to remind her of her mom before the disease.

More than 100,000 people have seen the 52 extraordinary quilts in the "Alzheimer's: Forgetting Piece by Piece" traveling exhibit. As you know, this isn't an easy exhibit to see. Many people find they can only look at a few quilts at a time before becoming overwhelmed with emotion. Some just find the experience too much to bear. The CD of the quilts has helped a lot, letting people click through the quilts at home, in private, listening to the voices of the artists tell about their work. (I always recommend tissues and chocolate.)
Now we will have a book! Alzheimer's: Forgetting Piece by Piece will be published this summer. You can order your copy NOW for a June delivery at http://www.amisimms.com/buybook.html
Purchase a book to experience the quilts AND to help find a cure. All profit is being donated to Alzheimer's research. For yourself, for a friend, for someone walking in the shadow of Alzheimer's...you can help.

In 2004, when American Patchwork & Quilting was collecting blocks for making quilts to be auctioned to raise money for the Susan Komen for the Cure project, many of us who were on Alex Anderson's message board decided to make a whole quilt to be auctioned. Details of the blocks to be sent were worked out. Some sent blocks with light pink centers and dark backgrounds and others sent the opposite. All sent some extra fabric for the sashing. I assembled and quilted the top and sent it off to be auctioned on ebay. I anxiously awaited our quilt being auctioned because I wanted it back! When it was posted, I began bidding but despite my best efforts to win the auction, every time I would bid, this one other bidder would outbid me. I finally gave up as it was getting to be more than I could afford to spend. I lost the auction and several friends from the AAMB began trying to help me find out who the person was who wanted this quilt so badly that they kept oubidding me. There was a "behind the scenes" story going on and I didn't know it but everyone else did. It ended up that my friend, Vicky McGee from CA, was the person bidding against me and she was trying to get the quilt to give to me. Little did I know! In June, 2005, while at a retreat in Paducah, KY, Vicky had planned to be there and present the quilt to me. She could not make it but was able to send the quilt to another friend to make the presentation, along with the sweetest note from Vicky. I had given up on ever seeing this quilt again and was thrilled beyond belief to see it again and realize that it was being given to me!
