"Embroidery Revisited" at Houston 2016 featured the beloved character Betty Boop in an embroidered quilt from the 1930s. Included in the exhibit were original drawings and a history of the character, who did all her chores in a feminine fashion.

They are taping new shows for our Star (Premium) members. We are having a great time with Joen Wolfrom, Sally Frey, Meg Hawkey, Pat Durbin, Ann Horton, April Sproule, and Laura Fogg. Every year at Comic-Con the costumers come out to play. Did you guess correctly what they made out of foam? Bet you didn't! Watch out, it's the Raptor Squad, and they each created their heads out of foam and paint. Think you could do it?

Last week we focused on the dos and don'ts of long-term quilt storage. Textiles over the course of many years are subject to deterioration from dust, moisture, pests, sunlight and other elements in our environment. This week we want to share a number of products that will slow down the deterioration process and help you keep those much loved quilts (and other textiles) in good condition for future generations to enjoy.
"The care and precautions you take with your quilts depend in part on whether you want to preserve your quilts for future generations or whether you want to display, enjoy and use the quilts in your home. To preserve a quilt indefinitely requires ideal storage conditions. The ideal conditions include storage of the quilt flat and completely unfolded in total darkness at a constant temperature of 50F to 60F and a relative humidity of about 50 percent."

Enjoy a vintage fashion show from Paris in the 1950s. Until this time, "High Fashion" catered to the upper class and wealthy. Soon, the fashion houses began to seek a wider market. Nancy, best known for her amazing, award-winning, hand-appliqued animal portraits, explains how childhood outings to the zoo inspired her choice of subject matter, and reveals a surprising secret about her wedding dress. She also shares the thought process that goes into each design, the various techniques she employs to translate the design to fabric, and some of her favorite hand-applique tips... and wait 'til you see the gifts exchanged between guest and hosts!

Yosemite Bear is the winner of the Celebrity RARE Bear contest here at TQS. The bears were created for the RARE Science Celebrity Bear Auction. RARE Science works directly with patient families and foundations to find more immediate therapeutic solutions for children with rare diseases.
Nancy writes,
"One night when I was a child I met a bear as I was walking back from the bathroom in Camp Curry in Yosemite. He was looking for food and fortunately I didn’t look very tasty so we both went on our way and I was left with an exciting story to tell.
This RARE Bear is a tribute to my Yosemite bear. He is wearing a vest with scenes from Yosemite. On the back he is walking in a meadow in front of Half Dome, and on the front he is in front of one of the waterfalls. Also on the front is a Steller's jay - a very vocal bird found in Yosemite.
The bear is foundation pieced in a crazy quilt style. The vest is hand appliqued and hand quilted."
Nancy started making quilts over 20 years ago after her mother took a quilting class and taught her what she had learned. Nancy has always loved animals, and found that by using applique she could create realistic animal portraits. She feels that animals are important parts of this world and should be celebrated and preserved. She has made many animal quilts, but with the wide variety of subjects available, she feels there are many more animal quilts waiting to be made.
Nancy has exhibited her quilts in a variety shows, museums, and galleries and has won many awards. They have been featured in several books and magazines and many are in private and corporate collections. She also teaches classes in hand applique and animal portraiture.
