Title of Quilt: Howard and Katy
Quilter's Name: Michelle Basten
Location: Darley, Victoria, Australia
My piece is called “Howard and Katy.” The subject came about from two different ideas. One was an inspiration from artwork by a Canadian Artist – Angela Morgan. The other from a casual conversation with my International Partner. The name is derived from the town that my Partner lives in – Katy and well, Howard is just a typical Duck name! This conversation was about red shoes and how I believe that “every girl should own a pair of red shoes”….. Doesn’t matter what they are ….. just red shoes. I grew up on a farm and my husband and I just sold our farm that we had owned for 17 years, where our Children grew up. Also knowing that my Partner is an avid animal lover, I thought that the subject was appropriate for both of us. My Partner and I both agreed to do art quilts and my idea was that it was to be solely fabric (no other medium). I used mainly Batik fabrics to achieve shading and colour. The quilting was done to represent the chicken wire in a chicken coop – although I have a Duck - and that both Katy and Howard are behind the wire fence.
Title of Quilt: Life is Like a Bowl of Silliness
Quilter's Name: Debbie Wolf
Location: Katy, Texas, USA
Inspired by the whimsical oil paintings of Angela Morgan, whose art is greatly admired by both my wonderful Australian partner and now great friend, Michelle Basten from Bacchus Marsh, Victoria, and me. With no intention to copy Angela exactly, my art quilt is a very rough interpretation and complication of a few of Angela’s art pieces. We did ask and receive Angela’s written permission to use her works as inspiration. This quilt was created with a raw edge appliqué collage technique using both batiks and cotton fabrics, and finished with a bit of thread play and a few embellishments. To make it my own I added items such as the fish and bird balloons and the ‘refreshments’ table. It took several frustrating, but fun attempts to settle on a technique to move forward to the final version. Once I decided on the process I started making progress. Of course, choosing the right background was an even bigger decision. I auditioned countless fabrics and the stripes won. I also choose rounded corners to soften the boldness of the stripe. And then I was finally able to say, "It’s done!"
