Cherry Guidry of Cherry Blossoms shares her Easter Bunny Mini Quilt tutorial at WeAllSew.com. How cute is this? The quilt finishes at 12 1/2″ x 14″ and makes a great table topper that can be sewn and quilted in an afternoon.

TQS brings you the story of the amazing and inspirational Nola Emerie, who—after suffering a massive stroke at age 52 that paralyzed the right side of her body—decided to take up quilting. Nola lets nothing stand in her way (including her pants?) when it comes to making beautiful quilts.

Nola's story is part of Show 1506: Two Amazing Women and the Power of Quilting, which also features Lisa Sipes. In 2008, during a dark period in her life, artist Lisa Sipes was encouraged by her mom to give quilting a try—and a passionate new quilter was born. Now a well-regarded professional longarm artist who loves detailed work, Lisa shares fun ways to add visual and textural interest to a wholecloth quilt with a variety of stitches and colored threads. She also shows how she creates her signature "triple stitch" and alternative ways to finish the edges of your quilt.

G and I love our adventures on the road...not only is our country amazing, but the quilters in it are awesome. The wonderful part about the art of quilting is the wide variety in which one can create. Contemporary, Vintage, Primitive, or Modern...there truly is something for everyone and I love it all. When we visit a guild or class, I love listening to the banter of quilting opinions because we as quilters truly have lots of choices and opinions. 

Landing back at home base is a blessing! I get to see my quilting peeps and what they have been up to. The Fabric Stalkers have been quilting together since the mid 90s and we are representative of the greater quilting community...a wide range of quilting love. I hope you enjoy the little slide show I put together of our show n' tell when we gathered to stitch together for the first time in 2019.

Claudia Pfeil recently visited the TQS set to tape a future show. While you might know her from her magnificent large quilts (think Fractal or Turtle Bay), she brought along this amazing, little, thread-painted piece. My Little Seahorse measures only 13.5" x 19.5" and is truly a machine quilting masterpiece.

The Marbaum Collection: Variations in Techniques

Discover a selection of quilts from the Marbaum Collection - a unique collection of 87 art quilts generously donated to SJMQT for its 40th anniversary - on display for the first time. Marvin and Hilary Fletcher started acquiring quilts in the early 1980s, eventually establishing a formidable trove of works from nearly 80 artists, bearing witness to the diversity and vitality of quilt-making from that time, to the present. The Marbaum Collection is both an invaluable resource for artists and researchers to explore, and a deeply personal collection woven together by the Fletchers’ long-standing passion for and philanthropic support of art quilts. The gifted collection, unprecedented in size and scope for SJMQT, will travel internationally before joining its new home in San Jose in 2020.


Kristen Martincic: Swim Club

Kristen Martincic uses swimwear as a surrogate for the female body, creating paper bathing suits that are a cross between a bathing suit and an underdress, skin and clothing. Social conventions and context play a significant role in how these garments are viewed by others and ourselves. These delicate paper suits talk about the awkwardness of vulnerability and exposure while maintaining a sense of levity.

Momentary & Timeless invites you to join six Bay Area fiber artists as they explore various ideas through a combination of haiku and the art quilt. Each artist presents a unique style that will draw you into the rhythm of the exhibit. You will be invited to write your own haiku and hang it on a “wishing tree” – a tradition unique to Japan.

Nina McVeigh (at WeAllSew.com) shows you how with this Strip-pie Table Runner. It is a great project to get you started with free-motion quilting. You will be using blocks and strips to define specific areas to quilt. Then, Nina will take you through four beginning quilting fills.

Here's what you need to get started:
  • By Hand Strip-pies by Benartex or other pre-cut 2 ½” strip set
  • 1/2 yard backing
  • 1/2 yard batting
  • BERNINA 570 QE Sewing Machine (I used the BERNINA Q 20 Sit-Down Longarm Machine to quilt the runner, but the quilting may also be done on a domestic machine such as the BERNINA 570 QE machine.)
  • Straight Stitch Needle Plate
  • 9 mm Patchwork Foot #97 / #97D
  • BERNINA Stitch Regulator #42 (The BERNINA Stitch Regulator is built into the Q 20)
  • If quilting with the Q 20 you will need a free-motion foot such as the Freehand Embroidery Foot #24 or the Ruler Foot #96
  • #80 Jeans Needle
  • Cotton Thread

Recently Alex brought us a lovely little bundle of fabrics that she just loved - they were pastels with luxe metallic gold woven throughout.

It was so pretty, and we thought of so many different things to do with it, that we had to share it with you too!

How to Participate:
The National Quilt Museum Annual Benefit Auction is a two tier auction. The auction will be exclusively online from April 7th – April 24th at 10pm. At this point all leading bids will be transferred to the live auction. If you are the leading bidder on an item on April 18th when the online auction is ending you will receive an email telling you that you are the leader and giving you an opportunity to make one more “highest bid” going into the live auction. 
 
The Live auction will take place on April 25th at 6pm at the Convention Center in Paducah, Kentucky. A proxy bidder will be representing all online bidders at the live event. All winners will be contacted by email within 48 hours of the live auction ending.

In Barbara's blog this month she shares more tips for Sizzle Month 4, including cutting tips that get her the fastest and most accurate results.
 
Barbara also suggests:
Watching Show 2401 again to see Becky pin and sew that small circle in place. Start at about 31 minutes to see this all-important step.
Watch Becky's Goldsmith's video Pinning and Sewing the Center Circle - even though it focuses on working with Block 8, the sewing process to set-in the circle is very similar.
