Each person's work was veiled in secrecy and you will be as surprised as they were by the results. They will share the message, tips, and techniques used to meet the challenge. Lo and behold, one of the three needs a bit of help when it comes to spelling.
You may have heard that high winds have been affecting California lately. That was certainly true at Quilting in the Garden this year. In some cases, the quilts wrapped around themselves as they fluttered in the wind. We still managed to photograph some quilts including a few TQS BOMs, and works by Sue Rasmussen, Nancy Brown, Laura Nownes, Diana McClun, Sunjata Shaw, Freddy Moran, and more. We even found a couple of new quilts by our very own Alex Anderson.
Margaret Solomon Gunn won First Place Wall Quilts Machine Quilted Mixed or Other at the Great Wisconsin Quilt Show with her quilt, Ode to Spring.
It is a stunning purple wholecloth quilt accented with silver dragonflies. While Margaret's longarm work is always amazing, take a look at the edge treatment. It adds that extra bit to an already spectacular, multi award-winning quilt.
There is still time before Halloween to make this adorable quilt, Halloween Cats, from Mickey Beebe. Pattern provided by AQS (approx. 71" x 78"). Think you'll need a little magic to finish it in time? Just make a few less cats.
Lilo recently visited the European Patchwork Meeting in Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, France and discovered a wonderful exhibit they were featuring there. Swiss quilt group patCHquilt was celebrating their thirtieth anniversary by putting on a showcase of 100 challenge quilts for the occasion. The challenge was open to all members of the group of every skill level and each quilt had to adhere to the following criteria:
Works must be original, not from a kit and must include a red border.
They must be 30 cm wide, 120 cm long, and displayed portrait style.
The quilt must include at least 1/2 of the Edelweiss fabric (that each person received), and feature a piece of that same fabric that is 10 cm x 10 cm in size.
To join in the celebration with patCHquilt, we will be featuring four of the challenge quilts each week that were displayed as part of the exhibition at the European Patchwork Meeting.

Well, it was everything I had imagined and surpassed all that the attendees had hoped for...Buttermilk Basin's Woolstock event was a huge success. By the end of the event everyone was tired and worried about how they were going to get all their loot back home! The 3-day event included a couple of meals a day, snacks to fill any treat bag, and three absolutely adorable projects which we prepped and started stitching. Since the event takes place in October, it is Halloween themed and both Stacy West and her crew created a festive environment! There were gifts, bingo, and contests each day and we stitchers love stuff, LOL.
At the end of the day we all would make the trek to the shoppe and add more loot to our ever growing pile. With each visit we would see something that we hadn't seen on the previous visit. Truly the best part of the event was the new friends and old friends we shared this creative time with. I was surprised at the number of Quilt Roadie friends that I got to spend time with!
One of the contests was a Halloween Brooch created by the participants. The brooches were laid out on the table and everyone voted for their favorite. The creativity of the Woolstock Stitchers made it extremely difficult to choose a favorite. I thought I would share the top 3 winners!
The combination of techniques used to create the brooches was wonderful and I think this type of contest would be fun for any guild or stitch group.

Don’t miss this wild romp through 45 years of International Quilt Festival history as you learn the story of the two women who created Festival and a whole lot more. At a time when women rarely owned a business, cousins Karey Patterson Bresenhan and Nancy O’Bryant Puentes broke social barriers and raised the bar for women as they turned what many saw as a hobby into a business, and created an appreciation for the art form that flourishes today. Their company, Quilts, Inc., also founded the International Quilt Market, which is credited with helping build the multi-billion dollar quilt industry. In addition, these two intrepid Texas women helped revive quilting in Europe through 20 years of Quilt Expo.
Wong spent countless hours interviewing the powerful duo for her book Magic & Memories: 45 Years of International Quilt Festival (available for purchase at the luncheon). The interviews, the research, the memories, and the magic of Festival will all come to life in this lively lecture. A meal with beverage is included.

Today we continue our selection of quilts recently displayed at the Spring Paducah 2019 show featured as part of The 14th Quilt Nihon Exhibition. The exhibit is described as:
"Organized by the Japan Handicraft Instructors' Association, the Quilt Nihon Exhibition is one of the most prestigious international quilt contests in Japan. The exhibit features 42 quilts from the "Innovative Traditional" category, which will later be exhibited at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art."

The San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles is pleased to have Meg Cox as part of their Winter lecture series. In her lecture, Success Stories: What It Takes to Make It Big In Quilts, Meg will talk about lessons learned from quilting icons such as Eleanor Burns and Tula Pink, as well as the strategies of people who found fortune, but not fame, in quilting.
