Every year we run into interesting pictures. We didn't expect this opportunity. As we traveled from the Show to the Hilton Hotel we saw this enormous shoe...

Check out this short film of the car.

As you enter the quilt section at the 45th Anniversary (Sapphire), you encounter a beautifully hung celebration display in blue. It's worth the trip all in itself. Here we show a picture and a quick video of the inner circle of quilts in the raised hanging. Keep checking our blog and Facebook for photos and scenes from this fantastic show. (Capt'n John has just finished taking pictures of just 3 jury sections and is blown away by the collection of amazing quilts).

Watch the quick video below. Then scroll down to see more pictures.

Every year as we Uber to the Hotel, we know we are close when we see the legal office of Tim Hootman. He has gathered some interesting art for his office landscape. Here are some examples as we drove by:

The awesome Big Blue Whale quilt was made in 2016 by Caitlyn Paige Baxter, age 7, with help from her mom Tiffany Baxter. It was exhibited on The Quilt Show set by Amy Milne of the Quilt Alliance. The quilt measures 47" x 53".

The whale in Big Blue Whale is adapted from Elizabeth Hartman's Preppy Pod pattern, and the quilt was made using the Michael Miller Challenge fabrics. Big Blue Whale received the 2nd place ribbon at the Modern Quilt Guild's QuiltCon 2017, in the Youth Category.

Below is Caitlyn's Artist Statement as written in the fall of 2016.

"The Michael Miller Luxe fabric made me think of water and water made me think of ocean animals and the first ocean animal that came to me was a whale because I like whales.  We thought of the diamond shapes for the spout because the fabric has diamonds on it.  I stitched all of it, and my mom helped me cut and pin the pieces.  Mommy helped me quilt it, and she also helped me with the binding.  I used Luxe Tumble Blocks, Fog, Luna, Midnight, and Magic Folk.  The whale is from the Preppy Pod pattern by Elizabeth Hartman."

This is a fun, short video showing what the Quilt Alliance is doing for the quilting world. One of their chief sayings is, "Quilts often outlive the Quilter," and they stirve to get the history and the stories of a quilt told to later generations. How? Take a look.

Learn more about the importance of documenting your quilts in Show 2509 with Amy Milne, Executive Director of the Quilt Alliance.

Bobbie Bergquist, owner of Quilters Treasure, needs your help. A donation page has been set up on Facebook (see link below).

"Today we lost everything. Our business & personal belongings. We are self employed and travel to Quilt Shows. Everything was in the motor home. We are both safe and saved our cell phones. Not sure yet what we are going to do. Right now we are counting our blessing. It was suggested by FOX26 to start a go fund me page. Not sure how it works. We can only trust that God has a plan & will help us through this." - Bobbie

There's still time to make this fun-loving mummy pillow by Stacy Schlyer before Halloween (or just learn how to make a slipcover). We particularly love the glow-in-the-dark eyes...

Cristina Arcenegui Bono of Spain has done it again with this wonderful quilt, Harmony. It is similar to a quilt we presented earlier called The Jump, in which she brings to life a cute little girl with nothing but some thread and a few dots of red. We'd like to live in Harmony's world, it looks like a fun place to be.

Harmony was exhibited at the Pacific International Quilt Festival 2019.

Lilo recently visited the European Patchwork Meeting in Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, France and discovered a wonderful exhibit they were featuring there. Swiss quilt group patCHquilt was celebrating their thirtieth anniversary by putting on a showcase of 100 challenge quilts for the occasion. The challenge was open to all members of the group of every skill level and each quilt had to adhere to the following criteria:

  • Works must be original, not from a kit and must include a red border.
  • They must be 30 cm wide, 120 cm long, and displayed portrait style.
  • The quilt must include at least 1/2 of the Edelweiss fabric (that each person received), and feature a piece of that same fabric that is 10 cm x 10 cm in size.

To join in the celebration with patCHquilt, we will be featuring four of the challenge quilts each week that were displayed as part of the exhibition at the European Patchwork Meeting.

This week we will be featuring a bonus quilt from Susan Vogel, who we will be sitting down for an interview with TQS when we visit the Houston International Quilt Show next month.

Please enjoy the next five quilts from Susan Vogel, Beatrice Zahnd, Brigitte Ricard, Brigitte Rossetti, and Cäcilia Arnold.
