If you happen to be planning a trip to Paris in the next few months or so, don't miss a ground breaking exhibit featuring stunning original works of art created on wood, paper and cloth.

A museum noted for featuring indigenous art from around the globe, the Musee du Quai Branly, has selected the works of eight artists to represent Australian Aboriginal art movement.

"By transposing to recycled wooden panels the motifs employed in ephemeral ritual paintings, the Aborigine artists of Papunya created an astonishingly inventive formal art, saturated with meaning. These works change the manner of understanding the territory and conceiving the history of Australian art.

With more than 160 canvases and almost 100 objects and photographs from the period, the exhibition presents the iconographical and spiritual sources of the Papunya movement and traces its development from the first panels to the large canvases of the early 1980s."

The exhbit is open 9 Oct -20 Jan 2013.

Sheila Frampton-Cooper (aka Zoombaby) is curating an exhibit to be on display at Road to California January 24-27, 2013.

It will showcase quilts that are inspired by maps, aerial views and topography of actual or imaginary places. It could be somewhere you visited or would like to, or a vision from a dream. You might imagine yourself in a spacecraft flying over an undiscovered planet, or take a trip into the vastness of an underwater world.

This is not a judged exhibit.

This exhibit will be juried for space. I will be looking for quilts that convey the theme from various points of view, and I really want to leave that open to your imagination. Craftsmanship is very important, however I do encourage the use of creative techniques.

I will be taking delivery of the quilts personally and transporting them to the Road to California office. I'll be there for the set up and the break down of the exhibit and I will be personally shipping the quilts back to you via FedEx 3 day air.

If you choose to offer your quilt for sale, please indicate the sales price on the entry form. Potential buyers will be given your contact information to contact you directly.

There is no fee to enter.

TIMELINE:
ONLINE ENTRY BEGINS OCTOBER 1, 2012

5092_renee1.jpgPaper piecing works wonders when when your goal is to achieve perfect points; however, the process can be frustrating when you sew a fabric of the wrong color in the wrong position (especially when there are lots of different colored elements).

Avoid "reverse stitching" by coding your master pattern with colored pencils or the written word. Color coding allows you to relax, enjoy, and stitch with confidence.

5080_brianbook.jpgFor success with creating your own memories quilt Brian Haggard (Episode 1106) offers these helpful tips:

  • Select nonbusy fabrics so that your embellishments become the focus.
  • The color palette you choose can create a mood.  Keep in mind that all of the elements of the piece (fabric, ribbon, thread, buttons, beads, etc.) should be in keeping with the overall mood for a cohesive look.
  • Make a story card.  Use a 3"x 5" card with scraps from each fabric used in the quilt.  Carry this card along when you shop for matching buttons, beads and so on.
  • Don't be afraid to cut through an image (photo printed on fabric).  Sometime it make the photo more visually appealing.  (See photo on the cover of the book at right).
  • Use found objects from around the house (spools, buttons, jar lids, cookie cutters, etc.) as the basis for your embroidery patterns.  Using the shapes of everyday objects will also result in a more primitive feel.
  • Ignore the boundaries of the fabric pieces by crossing the seam lines when adding your embroidery stitches will allow you to be more creative and give you more options.

As we continue our focus on getting YOUR studio organized, think vertical.  By getting things up and off the floor or table you will be amazed at how much your work space will increase.  Here are some great ideas to help you achieve vertical organization.

Pegboards can help corral a whole host of tools AND keep everything easily accessible. Pegboards can be found at most hardware stores, are inexpensive, and come in large sheets that can be cut down to size, which makes them a great "custom" solution regardless of the space available. To keep things even more streamlined and less visually busy, paint the pegboard to match your wall color.

Look at this great tip from Bernina's We All Sew for stashing your stabilizer. It's a hanging shoe storage rack.

Create a quick-and- easy design wall with this tip from TQS member mgbusb: Use interconnecting foam floor tiles! These tiles are generally used for children's play areas, but work equally well when attached to a wall with a few nails.

mgbusb says that "because they interlock, [the tiles] help hold each other to the wall." Covered with a sheet of batting cut to size, the design wall allows her to pin WIP (Works in Progress) without marring the walls.
