"It Has How Many Pieces"?  by mtcreekquilters

We found this quilt in the Gallery today and just had to share.  It is a postage stamp quilt made by mtcreekquilter who worked on this while her husband was deployed to Iraq.  She had LOTS of time on her hands.  Can you guess how many squares she sewed together?  Now, don't cheat by asking her!  What a great scrap buster project when you have lots of free time for sewing.

"Bad Bart" escorting an unruly show guest to Quilt Jail                  Photo by Gregory Case

Alex and Ricky are busy getting things in together for the upcoming show tapings in La Veta (March 27-April 2, 2008).  But they need your help.  They forgot to think up tips and tricks for the mini videos.  They were probably too busy playing around with their new photo shop programs!  Let's help them out with their homework.  Share your best quilting tip or trick by sending an e-mail to lilo@thequiltshow.com  Otherwise, Bad Bart may just throw them in Quilting jail.

Meet Sue Garman, the creator of our fabulous Block of the Month "Bouquets for a New Day" quilt.  Sue grew up in the aerospace industry, was trained as a CPA, and started her career by negotiating multi-million dollar contracts for NASA.  She married a NASA engineer that she met in Houston's Mission Control Center during a simulation of the first trip to the Moon.  While she loved working for an agency focused on exploration and discovery, she retired three years ago as Associate Director for the Johnson Space Center in Houston, having also served as Deputy Chief of Staff for NASA in Washington, DC. She is dedicated to supporting her community and serves on the board of directors of several local foundations.

Sue's years with NASA and its contractors never separated her from quilting, though.  She always regarded quilting as her daily "therapy".  As soon as she could thread a needle, her grandmother taught her to make crazy quilts; she literally does not remember a time before quilts.  Her quilting career started long before she left NASA - a local quilt shop had seen several of her quilts back in the 70's, and invited her to make patterns and teach.  That's where it all began - and where she continues today.  Her favorite venue is applique, but she also loves making complex, intricately pieced quilts.  You will rarely see her without a needle in hand - which explains how she finished over 20 quilts a year ago.  She simply has a passion for the art of quilting!

On a side note, we wanted to let you in on a little secret.  We met with Sue in October while working at Quilt Festival in Houston,TX.  At that time she had drawn three block designs for us to review.  By the end of November Sue had completed the entire quilt top as well as the introduction and patterns for January and February.  We have been absolutely amazed at the amount of work and detail she had put into this project for our TQS members.  Hats off to a great quilt artist!! To learn more about Sue Garman click here.

We hinted, we gave sneek peeks - and now, it's here! The 2008 TQS block of the month, Bouquets for a New Day by Sue Garman is now ready for download. This treat, valued at over $90 is available to all TQS Star Members for free! The photos are great and instructions are rich with tips and helpful information. Sue has knocked this one out of the ball park! You'll find the BOM banner (shown above) living just below the login/logoff and welcome window on the right.

The quilt image and the free downloads are in the banner on the right - not in the TQS Shoppe. The blocks will be for sale in the TQS Shoppe for those who don't wish to be a TQS Star Member. Kits will be available in the TQS Shoppe very soon.

The finished quilt. Bouquets for a New Day has twelve 16-inch blocks (finished size),
sashings, and borders. It measures approximately 63 by 79.5 inches.

It's a new day - and time to make bouquets! Are you in?

In just a few days we will be launching the first TQS block of the month pattern (thank you Sue Garman). We have received many emails inquiring about the cost. For ALL star members - it is FREE! How cool is that? In addition, our quilt Shoppe has put together a fabric kit which reflects the amount of fabrics Sue has suggested, 13 1/2 yards (although we know many of you will more than likely customize your quilt with your own stash). There will be a limited amount of kits - price $120.00 (includes binding, not backing) - that is only $10.00 a month. Just stay tuned, we are almost ready to go!
