Join us in Episode 609 for a show jam-packed with "tips and tricks" from two of the quilt world's best. Award-winning quilter, Judy Woodworth, shares the techniques she uses to create out-of-the-box, freeform quilted feathers. She even gets Alex in on the fun! Then author and quilt-show organizer, Bonnie Browning, shows that carefully chosen and applied borders and bindings can catapult your quilts over the top. Her no-measure, paper-folding binding technique will have you running to the office-supply store. There is so much "good stuff" in this show, you'll want to watch it again and again. To watch the show, click here

This beautiful quilt was one of the first I saw when entering the show.  It was made by Mark Sherman, TQS member "wood4mark".  "Wings and Feathers" won 1st place in the category "Bed Quilts, Quilted On Longarm/Midarm Machine".

Mark hand-dyed about 90% of the fabric in this quilt, and quilted it with a long arm machine.  Dana says "this is one of my personal favorites because of all the wonderful color and great quilting detail."

Dana Lynch is our TQS roving reporter at AQS Paducah.  She will be reporting throughout the day. Check back regularly for new reports from the show.  In this report, Dana was enchanted by a wonderful 90-year old woman who had been quilting for most of her life.

Annabel"This is Annabel Baugher.  She was a contestant in the show this year, and during the Preview Night on Tuesday, she was seated by her quilt telling the story of making it, and some stories about her life as well.  She drew the elements for the quilt, all inspired by things around her.   The doves are her favorite bird.  The Calla Lilies are from her Great Grandaughter's bridal bouquet.  Her stitches were tiny and beautiful.  It was a delight to hear her talk about her life and how quilting has been such a special part of it.  The quilt was in the frame for five years, and Annabel said, "Sometimes I wanted to work on it and sometimes I didn't, so there's no way of telling how long it took."  Annabel is 90 years old and has quilted for as long as she can remember.  I was very taken with her hands and wanted to take a picture of them. Her hands have touched many quilts, and quilted many stitches."

This year's Janome Best of Show award at the 2010 AQS Quilt Show & Contest in Paducah went to Sue McCarty, Roy, Utah, for her quilt, "Tribute to Tolkien."  The book, The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R.Tolkien was the inspiration for the quilt.  Sue originally created a freehand drawing on black cotton sateen and then quilted it with a variety of metallic and polyester threads.  She embellished it with paint and crystals. Interestingly she used two different battings, Hobbs Heirloom Black and Linda's Choice.  Congratulations to Sue!

Splendor in the Grass by Melinda Bula.  Best of Show 2009 at Chicago International Quilt Festival

Quilts Inc., producers of International Quilt Festival, have just announced that Spring Festival 2011 will now be held in Cincinnati, Ohio.  The new festival will be held in the Duke Energy Convention Center on April 8-10, 2011.  The move was prompted by many of the suggestions made by quilt show attendees.

The new location will provide more access to parking, lodging, and restaurants. Karey Bresenhan says that" We've enjoyed making new friends at our Chicago-area show and we're looking forward to seeing many of them just about 300 miles away in our new location...we're really sincere in our desire to see out and act upon well-thought-out suggestions for improving our shows to make them as appealing to quilters and quilt lovers as possible."  For more information about the upcoming Chicago Quilt Festival, April 16-18, 2010 click here.  Splendor in the Grass by Melinda Bula was voted Best of Show in 2009.  See more of Melinda's work in Episode 501 here.

We know how much you love the Bernina Today short videos because we've heard from many of you wanting to know if there will be more. Never fear, they have not gone away. The series of 13 Bernina Today videos roll out between May and October. Nina McVeigh is joined this round by Bernina USA's VP of Education, Jennifer Gigas.

The video shoot was wrapped up yesterday and they will begin rolling out next month. As always, you'll find very interesting sewing techniques scattered with small projects. In the mean time, why not review one of your favorites - or, if you are new to TQS and haven't seen them, spend some time in April checking them out. They live behind the Bernina banner on the upper left of most TQS pages. These bite-size lessons are perfect while sipping on your favorite beverage. Are you among the masses who are happy to hear the news?
