The quilt guild in Joplin reports that it has been absolutely buried in fabric and supplies, to the point that they can’t accept any more right now. If you have not donated yet, but would still like to help, please consider a monetary donation to the American Red Cross earmarked for the Joplin tornado relief fund. Thanks!

A treasured quilt was recovered after a devastating EF-4 tornado roared through the Shoal Creek Valley. While the family was thrilled to discover the quilt had been found 15 miles away, the reunion was bittersweet.

The quilt, belonging to Netty Wolfe, was recovered with the help of a Facebook page dedicated to finding items after the storm.

Unfortunately, Netty and her husband of 50-years, Charlie, didn't live to see its recovery as both were killed in the April 27 storm.

The quilt was made by Netty's mother, Lila Mae Bishop, and was packed away as it held such sentimental value for Netty when her mother passed.  The quilt was probably in a cedar chest when the storm hit and in reality should probably have been torn to shreds, but that's not what happened.

Their granddaughter, Crissy Wolfe Haynes had found it next to impossible to piece the family's lives back together and had no hope for finding valuable family belongings, until she spotted a picture of the quilt on a Facebook page. C'mon along, in Episode 812, as Quilting Adventure Guide (aka quiltmaker, designer, author, teacher, and surfer Rob Appell) "makes a splash" in our TQS studio. First he shows Ricky his Sewmando Vest, designed to keep a whole host of quilting tools within easy reach.

Then the focus shifts to one of Rob's most cherished quilting endeavors - the Endangered Species Quilt Project - in which he has teamed with Michael Miller fabrics to build awareness of our planet and her endangered specifies through quilting. Rob displays some of these special quilts, demonstrates how to create a clever clownfish design, and discusses his quilting process, including some great trouble-shooting tips for free-motion machine quilters.

3821_gammill_honorary_degree.jpgTQS Congratulates Gammill founder, Kennoth Gammill who received an Honorary Degree from Missouri State University-West Plains.  Mr. Gammill received his Associate of Applied Science degree on May 14 for his "unstoppable work ethic" and for impacting the quilting industry in a definite and positive way forever and worldwide.  This is the first honorary degree bestowed by the University.

In 1980, Gammill revolutionized the quilting world when he founded Gammill Quilting Machine Co. in West Plains, believing there was an easier, more efficient and more decorative way to machine quilt.  Instead of moving the fabric through the machine, Gammill's design moved the machine over the fabric, changing the quilting industry forever.

Congratulations Kennoth and thank you from all of us at TQS and quilters everywhere!

In light of the tragedy devastated Japan, we at TQS felt moved to contribute with the work of Alex's hands and the gift of learning from Ricky. Together we can make a difference for the people of Japan who have suffered so greatly.  Many of our great TQS members jumped in to help Red Cross Japan Relief Fund by donating over $31,000 while at the same time entering our Red Cross Contest for a chance to win this fabulous prize:

  • A quilt, designed, pieced and appliqued by Alex Anderson.  Border by Gloria Smith and machine quilted by Paula Reid.
  • One free tuition to a Ricky Tims Retreat in La Veta, CO, sometime in 2012. During this five day, ten-person retreat you will have the opportunity to study in an incredibly special environment with Ricky and foster your creative spirit.
  • TQS is throwing in $500.00 to help with transportation and lodging (to be reimbursed at the retreat).

And the randomly selected winner is......terihd!!!!! Congratulations

Contemporary folk artist, designer, and teacher Sue Spargo was born and raised in Southern Africa, and attributes the evolution of her signature, layered and embellished, “primitive”-style work to her childhood memories and her exposure to the energy and color of traditional African designs. Join us as she shares her wonderful folk-art quilts, and demonstrates her technique for adding dimension to a wool “base” leaf with layers of velvet, silk, and cotton.

As if that’s not inspiring enough, Sue then offers seven creative ways to introduce even more texture with embossing, embroidery, beads, and other embellishments. We wrap up the show with an on-site visit to the Monument, CO, home of Barbara & Bob Normoyle. Barbara, a prolific quilter, has a fantastic eye for decorating, and uses quilts throughout to enhance the décor. You won’t want to miss this jam-packed episode!

Congratulations to TQS Member, genevacarroll, June Cleaver on Acid, just won Best Use of Color at the Denver National Quilt Festival.  Geneva's quilt is the TQS 2009 BOM, Stars for a New Day.

Here's what she had to say about her quilt upon completion, "Well, here it is! What a journey! This quilt was made with stash fabrics w/a few newbies thrown in. Mine ended up 87" x 87", who knows how or why? This quilt is very, er, colorful... Please wear sunglasses when viewing it! I accept no responsibility for burned retinas! I must say, I've enjoyed making the quilt, which goes to the quilter today, but I have really enjoyed making friends w/all the 2009 BOMers. What a fun group! Thank you to each of your for your comments and your quilts. I've learned so much! geneva"
