After needlepointing an entire couch, it's no wonder that fiber artist and author Carol Ann Waugh decided to take up another form of needlework! Lucky for us, she taught herself to quilt. In this episode, she shows her "stupendously stitched" and quilted works and then demonstrates the "stupendous stitching" techniques that she uses to create her uniquely textured pieces.

                4812_stitches.png

She also shares a nifty edge-finishing technique, offers clever suggestions for using up leftover bits of your work, and discusses what it's like to create commissioned pieces for private and corporate collectors.

Last stop: an on-site visit with quilt artist Judith Trager of Boulder, CO.

Do you love a mystery? Join quilt artists and design teammates Debbie Caffrey and Charlotte Angotti, in Episode 1010, as they define what constitutes a mystery quilt, and how they collaborate on their mystery-quilt designs. Then each of these "designing women" reveals (to the audience and to her partner!) the mystery quilt that she's made using two pre-determined blocks.

It's not all a mystery: Debbie "spills the beans" on her power strip-cutting technique, and Charlotte "comes clean" with tips and techniques for crosscutting and machine quilting. All's well that ends well, however, as the pair serves up a tasty snack to Alex, Ricky, and the audience. (Instructions for three variations of the mystery quilt and recipes for the snacks are available (on the Projects Page) on the TQS site.)

As you may recall, four amazing quilts disappeared from C&T Publishing's booth at 2011 Spring Market.  TQS is happy to report that all four quilts have been found and safely returned to their owners.  They had been mis-marked in a long-term storage box.  Great news! (This is a screen shot from C&T, images will not enlarge.)

This summer, Edsel & Eleanor Ford House will play host to a celebration of imagination and inspiration with its second annual Fairy Tale Exhibit and Festival, Once Upon a Time: Grimmly Inspired. The family-friendly festivities highlight the 200th anniversary of the Grimm Brothers’ first published fairy tale.  The hightlight of the celebration will be a juried art show depicting the works of both teens and adults.

The centerpiece of this year’s fairy tale exhibit will be a juried art competition for teens and adults. To commemorate the more than 200 stories published by Jacob and Wilhlem Grimm, Ford House is putting the call out for two-dimensional, three dimensional, digital and video artwork submissions that will be displayed at the estate from July 28 through Nov. 2, 2012. In addition to the juried entries, the exhibit will also feature reproductions of historic Grimm Brothers fairy tale art from the collection of the Detroit Public Library and offer an overview of the history of the Brothers Grimm.
