6206_libby2.jpgOn Dec 24, Libby was moved to TIRR Memorial Hospital. This is the facility where Representative Gabrielle Giffords went through rehabilitation. This is an amazing place and only takes "qualified" candidates who they feel can make great strides toward recovery. Here is part of a current report:

What a fun day for Libby!  Lester reported the following:

"Libby is resting after a Saturday that included a cooking class making white chocolate covered pretzels, participation in a volleyball balloon tournament, and a live guitar concert, all organized by T.I.R.R..  It was a very busy, busy Saturday at T.I.R.R."

When my daughter, Elizabeth (visiting us in Houston with her husband and their three children from Manhattan for the holidays), and I saw Libby in the late afternoon, Lester was there after spending a full day at T.I.R.R., and he and Libby were still talking about all of the activities of the day.  Lester said Libby was a "star" in the balloon volleyball game in her wheelchair.  While he said this, Libby was rolling her eyes and saying "big whoop - BALLOON volleyball.".  more

It is with great pride and pleasure that we reveal our 2013 TQS Quilting Legend: quiltmaker, artist, and author, Michael James. Our first stop is the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, where Michael serves as Chair and Ardis James Professor of Textiles, Merchandising, and Fashion Design. UN-L is also home to the International Quilt Study Center and Museum, and we're treated to insights on the collections from Michael and Carolyn Ducey, Curator of Collections.

Then Michael reveals how he transitioned from painter to textile artist, and the evolution of his work in the process. In addition, he shares a technique for enhancing a wholecloth quilt, and welcomes us to his home for a tour of his studio, a peek at his fabric collection, and a preview of the newest piece on his design wall. It's a fabulous finale to Series 1300!

Janet Stone has been quilting for about 14 years, but things really took off for her in 2006 when she bought herself a Bernina. Janet has always loved writing, simply for the joy of making letters. In 2008, she made her first quilt featuring letters of the alphabet and entered it in a show. The quilt took first place, and since then Janet has committed to making 26 alphabet quilts, one for every letter of the alphabet, and entering competitions. Janet is also known for her love of sheep, and they often appear alongside the letters in her quilts.

Janet's quilts have won numerous major awards in both national and international competition. In 2012, she was inducted into the National Quilting Association's Master Quilt Guild for her quilt Red Letter Daze. Most recently, her quilt A Letter Bit of Baaltimore was awarded the 2013 Founder’s                                Award at the International Quilt Association's World of Beauty contest in Houston, Texas.

The holidays are in the air as quilt artist, author, and fabric and quilt designer Amanda Murphy connects with Alex and Ricky in historic downtown Charleston, SC. Amanda demonstrates how to make a fast-and-fun tree skirt, complete with inverted-miters, points, and continuous binding. She also shares a quick-and-colorful Christmas quilt, with trees in three sizes, snowflake appliqués, and pompom trim.

We finish with a tour of the day's location, The Old Exchange and Provost (built in 1767) which has played host to patriots, presidents . . . and pirates!

Looks like someone is on Santa's nice list this year. Libby is up and about using her walker.

In physical therapy Libby's progress in standing and walking is being slowed down by pain in her feet and ankles. Dr. Allum has recommended having Libby see a specialist to determine if botox injections in her ankles (certainly not for cosmetic reasons) might help improve flexibility. Lester has gotten an appointment for Libby a week from Thursday to see if this recommendation is appropriate. In the meantime, Libby is working hard at standing with the help of parallel bars and her therapist Pia and assistant Bola. They are excellent instructors, supporters, and cheerleaders, and Libby is giving it her all!

Pat and Sue are very interested in edge treatments for their quilts, and they love to look at old quilts and get ideas for different edge treatments.  For this quilt, you could use the red dot fabric and make a nice simple binding.

6131_dec_binding.jpg

In this lesson, Pat will show you how to embellish the binding fabric with decorative machine embroidery.  She will also show you how attach the binding.
