The progress on the studio continues. While I was away for a short trip to Denmark, the demolition was completed and new walls (closet space) went up. The best part of the new studio will be the views. Just take a look and see for yourself. Will I ever get any quilting done?

I have leftover scraps from a project I'm working on for Accuquilt. The previous post is located here. Comments were added to the post and each person commenting put their name in the hat to win my project scraps. And the winner is....

Tatum - she was selected by a random number generator - comment #42 of 196 comments at the time of the selection. It was great fun reading the comments. Tatum (Debra Joyce) said, "I'll turn that trash into treasure. Fabric and friends are always a treasure, no matter the size."  Congratulations Tatum!

The Contest is Over. Thank you for Commenting.

Alex and I both have new dies coming out soon with Accuquilt for the Go! I'm currently working on my project using the preliminary dies - these are not yet available. The shapes are based on my Bohemian Rhapsody applique motifs. However, it's not a replica of that quilt.

Anyway, instead of tossing the leftover cutaway bits (most which are already backed with Steam-a-seam 2), I thought I'd just give away all those scraps. For me, they are trash, but you might find them to be a treasure. They are all from my hand-dyed fabrics and if you like working with bits and pieces these just might find their way to your sewing studio.

To put your name in the hat, leave a comment that starts with "I'll turn that trash into treasure."

Be sure you put your name in the hat by midnight Sunday night (Sept 25th, 2011), we'll pick a name on Monday the 26th.

Below is my original Bohemian Rhapsody quilt, the inspiration for these new Accuquilt dies.

Ricky Tims, Alex Anderson and Libby Lehman eductate, entertain and inspire.

The Ricky Tims Super Quilt Seminar in Asheville, North Carolina concluded yesterday. A big thanks to the Asheville Quilt Guild for providing all the volunteers for this event and a shout out to Bernina USA for their continued support. The Asheville Cotton Co. (Bernina dealer) was on site and new Bernina sewing machines went home with several quilters who took advantage of the dreat deals that were offered. The Ricky Tims Whoo-hoo Nation grew by about 470 with students coming from several states! And, most of them are heading home with new hand-dyed fabric, books, CDs and DVDs to add to their collection!

You know, you only have to shout out "whoo-hoo" to officially be part of Ricky's Whoo-hoo Nation. If you haven't done so, leave your whoo-hoo comment and make it official now!

One student found a new way to audition fabric before purchasing.

The work progresses on the remodel - converting our oversized two-car garage into my new sewing room and workspace. Obstacles are never fun, but somehow we have to deal with them, move on, and try to learn from them. Two problems crop up and the project is just getting underway. One of them is pretty serious.

Creating commercial fabric from concept to market goes though many steps and usually takes about one year to complete. Today, Anna Fishkin who works with Red Rooster Fabrics in New York City, and coordinates my fabric line, got the first strike-offs from Japan. My designs are hard to replicate in commercial fabric because of the nuance of color blending and shifting. However, these turned out great. Usually we may have to go back and forth two or three times before we sign off on the strike-offs and go into production.

The good news is that instead of these being released in January 2012, they will most likely be ready for shops to see at Fall Market at the end of October and hitting quilt shops by February or March 2012! Whoo-hoo! If you like these crazy fabrics, what would you make?

Oh - and don't forget to leave your "whoo-hoo for Monika" in the comments.

Thanks so much for all the great ideas on what to put in the new studio! Wow! You guys know what you're talking about! If you missed the first installment and all of your comments, click here and check it out.

Well, day one has come and gone and here's video showing the demolition. I'm heading to Denmark for the 25th anniversary of the Danish Patchwork Association but I'll be back in the middle of next week. There's bound to be a few stories to tell about the progress.

Justin and I are starting a project. Our garage is going to be converted into a sewing studio. I thought it might be fun if you took the journey along with us - so, here we go! What are the smartest, most important things to include in a space like this? I have a blank canvas and no doubt some of your ideas will find their way into this project.

Hey everyone! Ricky here.

I'm curating an exhibition of improvisational quilts to be displayed at Road to California 2012. Anyone wishing to submit a quilt for this exhibit is welcome to do so providing the work is an improvisational design. Deadline for submitting is September 30, 2011.

What is an improvisational quilt? Any quilt that is started without a predetermined pattern or plan and evolves throughout the construction process. Each quilt in this exhibition should have emerged from the seed of an idea without fully knowing what the finished piece would look like. Sixteen to Twenty quilts will be chosen for the exhibit, depending on size. There is maximum of two submissions per person and submissions are free of charge.

This is not a competition. The quilts that are selected will not be judged. A Certificate of Exhibition will be awarded to each quilt chosen for display. This is a one-time, special exhibit highlighting the best of the best from "free-spirits" quilters around the world.

Whoo-hoo! Where will inspiration take you?
