The purpose of the “Mito Quilts of Hope” Project is to raise public awareness of Mitochondrial Disease (Mito) by educating talented quilters about this disease and having them make charity quilts for patients. Awareness of Mito will increase with anyone who sees the quilts. The project was conceived by Christine Knox who has Mito herself and wanted to do something to help raise awareness. She began the project in August of 2013 and hopes that it will make a difference in the lives of other Mito patients.

Every stitch will give hope for finding a treatment and eventually a cure of this disease while bringing warmth to someone who is very ill. It is our goal to give a quilt to every person diagnosed with Mitochondrial Disease in Canada and the US within 5 years.

Quilts are primarily green in color as that is the color for Rare Diseases. Other colors can certainly be incorporated, however the primary color should be green. We encourage all quilters to be creative with their use of the design. The quilts are made for all age ranges from children to adults. The sizes we request are lap size, approximately 48" X 64", all quilts should be accompanied by a pillowcase or bag. Another option is to make a quillow, a quilt which folds into a pillow.
