2015 BOM reduced size

Discussion started by Tqquilter 10 years ago

Just finding my way around Groups for the first time.  So as mentioned on the 'wall' shall we start a 'discussion' on making the 2015 BOM smaller.  Thanks AndreeBergeron for the half size option.  I would like to reduce it to make a quillow - but it is the applique blocks I especially like so don't want to do them half size.

tqquilter    PS   how do you do the signature?

As I wanted to do a quillow I am going to do a 2/3rds version - finishing 46 x 60 inches. starting with a 12 inch house and grass block and adjusting the borders so I can have 6 inch blocks in the later border.

Just in case any of you haven't seen it Andree has posted 1/2 size instructions on the forum - just go to recent topics and you should find it there. Happy quilting :0)

Rita that's lovely, I am loving your colours, gosh how quick do you sew. Renata I'm going to take a look at the BOM pattern again and will probably start it and do what you are doing, that way I can control how big it grows. Maybe a Christmas theme will be better. I did a Lynette Anderson Christmas quilt a couple of years ago, which my Grandson claimed. I had just finished hand stitching the binding and was admiring my work when he came in and said, "Oh Mama my quilt's finished, is it ready for me to take home?" It was a relatively easy pattern but I wish that I had let my Grandson draw the motifs (Santa, snowmen reindeers etc.) to personalise it.

Wow, Rita, you were fast! Love the way the green of the trees plays with the yellow of the house. Everything just looks like it belongs together. Very, very nice!

No...no extra costs if you are a full member of TQS. BOM pattern is free.

New to this venue and not sure how it works. I didn't see any costs associated (besides your fabric/supplies to make) for the BOM. Did I miss it?

Pam, I don't know if this will be of help to you, but I, too, was undecided about making the 2015 BOM. So, my decision is to make the center block with the house, the heart border, the flower border the mini-piano key border and stop there... unless, I am really having fun and decide to keep going to the end. If I do make it to the end, I will make the applique blocks into a Christmas theme and continue to the finish line with everyone else! This means that I am picking my colors up front to be consistent with a Christmas theme, in case I decide to go beyond the house and first couple of borders. Either way, I am doing a half size quilt so either the short or long version of it will be a wall hanging. Hope this is an idea that might turn you towards joining in!

I have been playing around with the centre block to see if I could actually do it 1/2 size. So far it's okay except that I found it impossible to do the sheeps heads with a needle turn technique so had to do raw-edge for that. I think I will be making two versions of this in 1/2 size - one from the Christmas stash and the other from The Stash. ;0)

Denise, when you print the PDF, isn't there an option to print at 50%? You need to check that the 1" square measures 1/2". The house block should be 9" x 9" finished (6-1/2 x 9 without the front lawn).

So I drafted the house block to 1/2 size and made it then found the 50% reduction on the copier. So I was not too far off but I will remake the block as my house was a little on the tall side. Once the 2nd one is done I will post pictures of them.

Denise, I'd never heard of this Billie Lauder method but just looked it up and I am going to give it a try. Thank you for bringing it up!

I am drafting. My house now. It will not be exactly 1/2 but close. I did make a couple of 9patch blocks this morning. Just to see if I could. Those came out just fine. I used the Billie Lauder method starting with 3 in squares.
